  19. How to edit a letter 1. Original draft At the risk of being attacked by Australia’s loyal cricket fans, there are many of us who DON’T care about Shane Warne’s shoulder. Why is it that every time a highly paid Sports Star becomes ill or succumbs to injury we all have to hear about it? While I do sympathise with them on a human front, they are after all only human. They have already made their fortunes and are not going to be too badly off if their playing careers come to an end. There is always a coaching or commentating job to be found. So many times the important issues such as workers who lose their jobs pre Christmas, or brave volunteers who become injured helping the community have to take second place in the media to the stories about our Sporting Heroes!! There are other people around who suffer pain. Do Sporting Heroes really sell newspapers? They’re not trying to save anyone’s home, or put food on the nation’s tables. They are just doing their job – like everyone else.

  20. Editing: Original: At the risk of being attacked by Australia’s loyal cricket fans, there are many of us who DON’T care about Shane Warne’s shoulder. Why is it that every time a highly paid Sports Star becomes ill or succumbs to injury we all have to hear about it? Edited version: At the risk of being attacked by Australia’s loyal cricket fans, there are many of us who don’t give a toss about Shane Warne’s shoulder.

They have already made their fortunes and are not going to be too badly off if their playing careers come to an end. There is always a coaching or commentating job to be found. Edited version: Spin doctors putShane’s shoulder on the front page of our newspapers. Orthopedic doctors and other physical therapists undoubtedly queue to treat his dislocation while we nobodies must queue for our doctors’ attention. So much for an equitable health care system!

Original So many times the important issues such as workers who lose their jobs pre Christmas, or brave volunteers who become injured helping the community have to take second place in the media to the stories about our Sporting Heroes!! There are other people around who suffer pain. Do Sporting Heroes really sell newspapers? They’re not trying to save anyone’s home, or put food on the nation’s tables. They are just doing their job – like everyone else. Edited version: While highly paid sporting heroes have the cash, kudos and sex-appeal to access all the therapy they need, we must endure the pain of long hospital waiting lists and inadequate after-care service. For some of us, there is no-one waiting in the slips to cook our meals, change our dressings etc. It is indeed a testing time.
