About the Author • Langston Hughes was an American poet, author, social activist and playwright. • Hughes was born in 1902 in Joplin, Missouri • He was known for being one of the leaders of the Harlem Renaissance • Hughes is known for his poems, such as "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", "I, Too" and "Mother to Son" • Hughes died in 1967 from complications in surgery
