  5. Define the need Support complex investigations into organized criminal activity Provide guidance to deployment of resources Provide situational awareness to decision makers in a particular area

  6. Planning • What are your sources of information? • What will be your process to get information from sources? • What output what is needed by users?

  7. Collection • What’s out there, tried and tested? • Does what you’ve defined exist? • Product Demonstrations • User/Technology feedback • If it doesn’t exist, what then?

  8. Collation Compare apples and apples Define the criteria across the board; what functionality does the unit need from the software? Develop functionality matrix

  9. Analysis/Evaluation • Compare and contrast... • Cost of • Software? • Licenses? • Hardware? • Support packages?

  10. Re-evaluation / Feedback • Vendors are not all created equal • improvements based on input from the field? • New versions included? • reputation is important to smart businesses- • go to other customers

  15. Report/Incident Management Purpose: To identify initial, preliminary information about an incident that may or may not to lead to future intelligence or an investigation. Investigative Case Management Purpose: To track investigations and leads and activities conducted in support of investigations in order to preserve a record for investigative and prosecutorial purposes, as well as to manage work flow of investigators and analysts. Intelligence/Tips/Leads Management Purpose: To collect supporting information about organized criminal activity and the businesses or people associated with it. Supporting information has value but may not meet initial the burden of proof for a separate investigation on its own.

  16. Supporting Technology Word Processing Purpose: To produce text documents, including bulletins, fact sheets, investigative summaries, and analytical reports.

  17. Supporting Technology Spreadsheet Purpose: To organize numerical data in a column-and-row format for summarization, calculations, comparison of data and data charting.

  18. Supporting Technology Relational Database Purpose: To organize data in relation to other data in a format of records and fields arranged into several tables in order to determine commonalities and relationships among data. The relational database tool can also be used for record keeping.

  19. Supporting Technology Mapping/Geographic Information System (GIS) Purpose: To display geographic data using points or shapes corresponding with specific locations or areas on a map to aid in crime mapping and strategic intelligence charting.

  20. Supporting Technology Public Information Database Resources Purpose: To provide access to compiled public data sources with one comprehensive search.

  21. Supporting Technology Presentation Software Purpose: To produce professional looking slide show presentations, with the capability to incorporate text, photographs, graphics, and animation. Working Hard…

  23. Supporting Technology PDF File Creation Software Purpose: Allows the creation of PDF format files. PDF files can be viewed and printed on any platform (Macintosh®, Microsoft® Windows®, UNIX®), thereby facilitating the sharing of information.

  24. Supporting Technology Statistical Analysis Software Purpose: To analyze large amounts of data to identify trends.

  25. Supporting Technology Publishing Software Purpose: Produce professional looking publications, such as newsletters or bulletins

  26. Supporting Technology Communications/Telephone (Toll) Record Software Purpose: To organize structured information collected from telephone billing systems (including cellular phones), pen registers, and dialed number recorders for analysis

  27. Supporting Technology Timeline/Flowcharting Purpose: To display chronological events in an easy-to-understand format.

  28. Supporting Technology Link Analysis Purpose: To link associated information from a structured data source and display the links between entities in a graphic display. Also useful for documenting data sources and can help FIND the links in a large, complex data set.   29. Supporting Technology Data Mining /Text Mining Purpose: Automates the process of determining patterns and relationships in extremely large volumes of information (either statistical or in text) too large for an individual to manage.

  30. Supporting Technology Data Visualization Purpose: To automatically display information in formats such as graphs and pie charts. This capability can sometimes be part of a larger software application, such as spreadsheet software
