NURSING • Nursing is a career that allows you to help people from all walks of life and can bring you great satisfaction • Nursing has a great career path • Nurses work in interesting places with interesting people in all parts of the world • Nursing pay is equal to other allied health professionals . • Nurses work to promote and maintain the health of individuals and communities

WHAT ITS LIKE WORKING IN NURSING • Nurses work in interesting places in a variety of specialties eg. operating theatres, accident and emergency, maternity, childrens nursing, aged care, mental health, community health • From hospitals, to health centres to independent nurse practitioners. • In the city, rural and remote areas, overseas, in third world countries, on boats or the flying doctor service. • Plenty of jobs, highly sort after • Starting wage approximately $47,000 a year without penalty rates

  6. Content: Nursing studies are central • health, partnerships, health breakdown, professional studies • Supported by studies in • Biomedical sciences • Behavioural sciences: • Sociology • Psychology • Early medical/ surgical clinical experience in year 1

Where are lectures, tutorials and clinical laboratories conducted? • If you are enrolled at Callaghan Campus they are held at Callaghan. • If you are enrolled at Port Macquarie they are held at the North Coast Institute of Technology, Port Macquarie. • If you are enrolled at Central Coast they are held at Ourimbah Campus.

  8. CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Clinical Placements Location: Nursing students go to community centres, aged care areas, mental health settings and major teaching hospitals throughout the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid North Coast. If studying at Ourimbah eg Gosford and Wyong Hospitals If studying at Callaghan eg John Hunter Hospital If studying at Port Macquarie eg Manning Base Hospital. How much? There are 800 hours of clinical experience over the three years

  9. Clinical Placements Year 1 • 2 weeks, 4 x 8 hour days in a general hospital in the second semester of study Year 2 • 4 weeks in each semester. Will include a 2 week mental health placement; 2 weeks aged care and 4 weeks Med Surg. Year 3 • 6 weeks in semester 1, 2 periods of 6 weeks in semester 2.

  10. Part timeStudents can study part time and decide each semester about how many courses they choose to study in that semester. Part time study can involve from 1 to 3 courses each semester

  11. CLASSES Classes: • Full time approximately 15 hours per week of classes for the 14 week semester • Enrolment in 3 or 4 courses is regarded as full time enrolment

  12. WHO WILL STUDENTS WILL BE LEARNING FROM? • Lecturers are all registered nurses with their own specialties. • Specialists from industry teach in the clinical laboratories, mentor students on clinical placements as well as give guest lectures.

  13. Key areas of research • Aged Care and Healthy Ageing • Paediatric, Youth and Family Health Nursing • Clinical Research and Development • Midwifery • Mental Health

  14. In semester 1, 2008 the UAI was 60.3. In 2006 the UAI was 70. • Newstep is an option for a HSC student who has received a low UAI score, is under 20 years of age, and had unforseen circumstances in their HSC year. • Nursing suits a person who likes a challenging and interesting environment with something different happening everyday. • Can be completed in a part time mode.

  15. Costs Uniforms, travelling and accommodation (when required), are costs that need to be met by the student. There are some grants available to subsidise the costs of rural clinical placements. Information on our University Website.

  16. Enrolled Nursing This course is offered through TAFE and the local Health Service. This course is highly competitive. It provides advanced standing for four courses to 8 courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program.
