Selecting Partners • You need to select a business partner. • A foundation needs to make an investment. • Can you find a match?
Research First • Missions match? • Similar projects funded? • Geographic match? • Grant request in line with history? • Logical fit? • Guidelines manageable?

Submitting the Application • Be on time – not too early or late • Follow the guideline • to staple, clip, or bind… • Once Submitted – • Verify receipt with a call • Ask for time frame • Be patient but diligent in follow up
What The Funder Will Do • Log in the application • Review executive summary for fit • Select those that match the mission • Further review, requests and check references – including other funders, web sites, similar organizations, etc. • Assess viability • Make decisions
The Response • If Yes – Thank everyone! • If No – Thank everyone! • Ask for feedback • Don’t take it personally • Consider this a continuous learning process
Communication After • Nurture Relationship • Encourage Site visit • Invitations to events, • Reporting • Recognition • Renewal
Reporting • Plan for the report from the start • Understand clearly what is required • Give them what they want • Be accurate • Be on time
Asking for More • Understand the ground rules • Don’t let the Renewal be your first communication since you cashed the check • Highlight the fact that you were previously funded in the application • Be on time

Plan Ahead Rushed deadlines… lead to errors and failed efforts
Renewals Late renewals indicate: poor planning and/or lack of interest
New Organization & Starting From Scratch? Be creative in assembling the information required… and in positioning yourself as well qualified while… minimizing the risk you represent.
