  1. Is Getting An Eloira IUD Painful? Eloira is a soft, flexible, T-shaped contraceptive device, which is located inside the uterus (intrauterine device or IUD). It continually releases a drug that prevents pregnancy for five years. It is also used in the therapy of excessive menstrual losses. It is levonorgestrel which is a progestin, hormone produced by the ovaries. It also exerts its action on the cervical mucus whose consistency hinders the movement of sperm that can swim uncomfortably to the cervix. This IUD starts acting as soon as it is inserted. However, it is advisable to wait 24 to 48 hours before having sex. Eloira IUD is placed in the uterus by your doctor within seven days of the onset of a menstrual period. Before inserting the device, your doctor will most likely perform a gynecological examination; he will explore your uterus to place the device in the correct position and exclude the possibility of pregnancy or other gynecological disorders that would make the use of levonorgestrel undesirable. The intrauterine insertion of the device takes place in your doctor's office during a routine consultation and lasts only a few minutes. According to the indications of your doctor, you will probably have to come back for a consultation within 4 to 12 weeks after insertion of the device, then once a year, to examine that it is in the correct position. The device can remain in place for five years. At the end of this period, it must be decided whether the device will be replaced or just removed. It is essential that this medication is used as directed by your doctor. Is the insertion of the device painful? You may feel some pain after the insertion of the device or during its withdrawal, but they are transient and much less critical than those caused by endometriosis. Possible causes of IUD pain Although its operation is simple, errors or side effects that cause pain can occur for different reasons. In the first place, pain is common when inserting the hormonal birth control IUD, especially if it is not done during menstruation, although the process is brief and usually remits after a few days. The same happens when removing the IUD, even if it is not done by the appearance of problems it is easy to feel discomfort during the following days. Another of the most common causes of discomfort due to the IUD is the appearance of colic in the first weeks of use. Stomach pain and other discomforts usually subside, although the copper IUD can increase bleeding during menstruation and therefore pain. If the pain persists, it is convenient to go to the doctor to find the best solution to the problem. In the last place is the pain derived from the misuse or placement of the IUD, since in that case, it may rub during sexual intercourse or when performing sports. It is advisable to check regularly if the IUD has moved, especially if the pain is felt since it can be an indication of a tear or perforation of the uterus.
