  1. How fast do you usually read these?

  2. What is reader faster? • Scanning • Skimming • Intensive reading • Extensive reading

  3. Why reading faster? • You will get through required reading more efficiently Reading more in less time • You will enjoy your extensive reading books more and so you will read more. • You will improve your comprehension • Reading separate words makes it hard to understand what you read because you must remember each word as a separate piece of information. By the time you get to the end of a sentence you may have forgotten the beginning.

  4. How to read faster? Strategy 1: Check your reading habits • Do you try to pronounce every word as you read? • Do you usually move your lips while you read silently? (200 WPM) • Do you follow the words you read with your finger or a pencil? • Do you translate into your native language as you read in English? Or do you often write translations of words in the English text?

  5. How to read faster? Strategy 2: Read meaningful phrases or "chunks" Which of these is read by a faster reader? • Each chunk / should be a phrase / that makes sense / by itself. • Each chunk should be a phrase / that makes sense by itself.

  6. How to read faster? Archaeologists have found /the earliest known evidence /of a special connection / between humans and cats. Last month in Cyprus they discovered the grave of a 30-year-old villager who died 9,500 years ago. With the body, they found jewelry, seashells, and other items. Less than a meter (3 feet) away, in another grave almost certainly made at the same time, lay the bones of a young cat. Cat bones have been found before near early human settlements, but scientists believe they belonged to wild cats. These cats probably stayed around human villages to catch the mice and rats attracted by the supplies of food.

  7. How to read faster? Strategy 3: Skip over unknown words For example: book P91 & 92

  8. How to read faster? Strategy 4: Use reading sprints Regular practice with reading sprints will help you increase your reading rate and become more comfortable reading at faster speeds.

  9. How to read faster? Strategy 5: Practice with timed readings Regular practice in reading against the clock is the best way to increase your reading rate. Example: you will time yourself as you read the passage in your book “The Frozen Man” and then answer comprehension questions.

  10. It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. This is only true if you pursue it unwisely. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hang-over. Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness.
