  1. What Should We Do?

  2. Some Formal Points • The duration of the project will be 4 years • The request for EU funding needs to be reduced • The number of JRAs needs to be reduced • Suggested is to merge at least LED, EUROdrive and High Gradient • Will give more flexibility in distribution of resources • From ILC, a number of additional requests to extend the FP7 bids came in late • Will be integrated where they fit • But request already has been too large • Firm commitments are to be made before end of September

  3. EUROdrive Topics • 1) Drive beam phase feedback system • 2) Drive beam alignment and tuning procedures • 3) Breakdown measurements in CTF3 • High Gradient • 4) CLIC machine protection system • Also GADGET • 5) Main beam simulation studies • Very low level of resources • 6) Longitudinal bunch profile measurements • Also GADGET

  4. LED Topics • 1) Demonstrate main linac quadrupole stability • 2) Explore sub nanometer stability for final doublet quadrupoles • 3) Characterise the noise of different machine components in CTF3 • add ATF2, but needs not be part of FP7 • 4) Develop ultra-fast transverse feedback system • What needs to be done beyond FONT? • 5) Main beam luminosity studies. • Very small amount of resources

  5. LED Topics II • 6) Determination of requirements for IP instrumentation, stabilisation and feedback • It is not clear how this can be tied to CTF3. Possible if small request of resources. • 7) Test of girder and quadrupole alignment equipment with beam • 8) Accelerating structure alignment on the girders and to the beam • 9) Development of fast beamstrahlung and beam energy monitors that can resolve the beam pulse • 10) Crab cavity development and tests in CTF3

  6. LED Topics III • 11) Laser wire • 12) Design of alternative ILC interaction regions • Could be integrated but hard to justify resource requests • 13) Beam dumps • Were not in the scope of the LED JRA, mainly looks like engineering

  7. Combined Topic List • 1) Drive beam phase feedback • Mainly address the phase monitor • 2) Longitudinal profile monitor • to be coordinated with GADGET • 3) Beam tuning studies • mainly focus on the drive beam • maybe can add a little for ATF2 • Need to fit program development in • 4) Machine protection • mainly focus on loss monitors • can integrate some simulations • to be coordinated with GADGET

  8. Combined Topic List II • 5) Demonstration of 1nm stability in main linac • 6) Sub-nanometer stability for final doublet • 7) Precision alignment equipment • 8) Accelerating structure mechanical alignment • 9) Crab cavities • 10) Laser wire • 11) Supporting simulation studies • I consider this vital • Can include design • Will probably get limited funding

  9. New Topic List III • 11) Things from the seperate lists that are well enough supported • Fast feedback • Luminosity monitoring • Beam dump • 12) High gradient and precision topics

  10. Next Steps • Programme must be established before beginning of September • Firm commitments need to be made before end of September • Need more formal approach • Everyone is to provide a description of their contribution • Requested resources must be specified • Matching funds must be specified (>2*request) • Indication of level of certainty • We will send out a template • Will need to reduce requests soon • Make sure that yours are registered in time

  11. Other Points • Organisation into JRAs and tasks will need to be done • But should be relatively transparent for the work • The formal contacts in your laboratory need to be prepared • The reporting will later be based on a scientific and an administrative path • We should meet in person • Presentations at CARE meeting (September 10) • Maybe use time of CLIC meeting (October 16-18) for technical preparation of the bids

  12. Required Information • Fill in the template as soon as possible • If you have questions contact us • First selection will be made on matching funds • Make sure you can bring a firm commitment as soon as possible • The programme needs to be well defined • Objectives will be required • Work description will also be required • In activities involving several partners this may take a bit more time • Still be quick with the commitment confirmation
