  1. The Science of Physics Physics Old Fort High School

  2. What is physics? • Draw a picture of what physics means to you? • Create a list of the top 5 key words that describe physics • Class Debate for top 5 words • Create a definition that involves all 5 words (2 groups)

  3. Course Outline • Mechanics • Properties of Matter • Heat • Sound and Light • Electricity and Magnetism • Atomic and Nuclear Physics

  4. Areas Within Physics

  5. Tying a Shoe • HW: Create a lab write up for the following problem: How do you tie a shoe?

  6. What is the Scientific Method? • Share your “scientific method” for tying a shoe. • Attempt the experiment as each scientist reads off their procedures. • What worked well on each write up? • What did not work well on each write up?

  7. Scientific Method cont… • What is necessary in a lab write up? • What is expected in this class and beyond (higher education) for a lab write up? • Create a classroom Rubric for lab write ups. -Possibly use rubistar

  8. The Scientific Method • The process that researchers use to carry out their investigations is often called the scientific method

  9. What are we missing on this diagram? • Create your own flow chart to depict the scientific method…

  10. Define the following words: • Model- • System- • Controlled Experiment-

  11. Measurements in Experiments • Quantity-has magnitude, size, or amount • NO NAKED NUMBERS! Why??? • Name the farthest distance you have traveled? What is considered far? What is considered big, small, heavy, light? • Far, Big, Small, Heavy, Light are all relative without units!
