Jan Van Eyck. c.1395-1441 active painter from 1422-1441. Jan Van Eyck was considered one of the best northern European painters. He perfected the use of oil paint. In 1425, Van Eyck entered service of Duke Phillip the Good of Burgundy.

  1. Jan Van Eyck c.1395-1441 active painter from 1422-1441

  2. Jan Van Eyck was considered one of the best northern European painters. • He perfected the use of oil paint.

  3. In 1425, Van Eyck entered service of Duke Phillip the Good of Burgundy. • Was a painter and valet de chambre (a manservant who acts as a personal attendant or secretary) to the duke. • This job was very well paid. • Also painted for personal clients.

  4. Van Eyck signed and dated his frames which was very unusual for his time. • He was also very smart and studied the classics and Latin.

  5. He put in painted jewels and precious metals with a glowing inner light by putting glazes over the highlights. • Van Eyck carefully selected and arranged the things in his paintings so that it would contribute deeper symbolic meaning to his painting

  6. His most famous piece was also his most controversial. It was called the Ghent Altarpiece. -Another artist (Hubert Van Eyck- possibly his brother) started this piece but Jan Van Eyck finished it. • This altarpiece was the most complex and beautiful altarpiece made in the 15th century.

  7. Jan Van Eyck signed and dated this picture which was very rare for this time. The Arnolfini Portrait

  8. Adoration of the Lamb- is part of a huge altarpiece (the Ghent Altarpiece) ; painted on both sides, it is very large and complex.

  9. The Ghent Altarpiece- the most complex altarpiece made in the Netherlands in the 15th century. It hangs in Cathedral of St Bavo in Ghent. The Ghent Altarpiece
