The Berlin Wall, constructed between 1949 and 1961, was built to prevent East Germans from fleeing to the West amidst widespread emigration. This defensive barrier, originally barbed wire, evolved into a complex fortification with multiple layers and guard towers. Despite the deadly risks, many East Germans attempted dangerous escapes, often through tunnels. The wall fell on November 9, 1989, symbolizing the end of the Cold War and the collapse of communism, leading to significant changes in the lives of millions.
