  2. Welcome to Varna! Hello! I am your guide. I am going to show you Varna’s sights. Remember them carefully. There are going to be questions in the end. Let’s go!

  3. Here we are in front of the map with Bulgaria’s regions. Varna and its region are located in the northeast of Bulgaria.

  4. Symbols of Varna! And now I’m going to show you the symbols of our sea capital. Which one are we going to start with?

  5. Cathedral The Cathedral of “The Assumption of the Virgin” is one of the symbols of our sea capital. It is situated in the city centre. It is both a place for prayers and a tourist attraction. The Cathedral was designed by the Odessa architect Maas Pomeransev and was built by Gencho Kunev of Triavna, an eminent Revival-Period master builder. Prince Aleksander I Batenberg set the foundation stone, on 4thAugust 1880. The construction was completed in 1886. The Cathedralis the second largest Ortodox Church in Bulgaria after the “Saint Alexander Nevsky” cathedral in the capital Sofia.

  6. The sea garden The sea garden is best known for its beautiful green areas and various species of natural plants. You can take a walk along the Alley of the Renaissance with monuments of some of the most famous Bulgarian national heroes. The Sea Garden is one of the symbols of Varna - one of the absolute musts - the most spacious of the parks in the Mediterranean region and a masterpiece of landscape architecture.

  7. The person primarily associated and regarded as having done most for the garden's modern appearance is the CzechAnton Novák. He was invited to Bulgaria by Karel Skorpil, the leading archeologist in Bulgaria. When Skorpil moved in Varna, Novák joined him and stayed here till his last day.

  8. The Aquarium The Aquarium was built in Varna in 1912. The central hall of the aquarium displays a breathtaking sight of sea creatures, some of them are common, but others are very rare. The Dolphinarium The only dolphinarium on the Balkan peninsula is truly one of the most exciting attractions that Varna offers to its guests. Visitors will be amazed by the high intelligence and perceptive skills of the sea mammals while enjoying the 45 minute long show.

  9. The Sports and Culture Palace The sports and culture palace is another symbols of Varna. It is famous for its original architecture and offers various possibilities for sports and culture activities. The festival and congress center The festival and congress center is located in the heart of the city, right next to the entrance to the Sea garden. Movies and concerts are available for the audience daily. The Festival centre is a venue of congresses, festivals, concerts, movie shows. It prides on the International Film Festival ”Love is folly".

  10. The N.Y.Vaptzarov Naval Academy was founded in 1881. N.Y. Vaptsarov NavalAcademy is the oldest technical school in Bulgaria. The Naval Academy The N.Y.Vaptzarov Naval Academy has also become one of the symbols of Varnadue to its strikingarchitecture.With its illustrous history and traditions in training sea specialists, N.Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy is one of the symbols of Varna and Bulgaria in the world maritime community..

  11. The Clock Tower The idea of building a representative city clock towerwas realized in 1888. The architect Sava Dimitrievich was commissioned by Varna Municipality to draw up a draft of a stone fire tower with a clock. The place had not been chosen accidentally – the new clock in the city garden and the cathedral outlined the centre of the city at that time. The Asparuhov Bridge The Asparuhov Bridge hasbecome one of the emblemsofVarnawith its impressive dimensions. The length of the bridge is 2050 m and its height is 50 m. Тhe Asparuhov Bridge is part of the Black sea highway.

  13. Museums in Varna And now I will present you some ofthe museums in the city. Their exhibitions will impress you a lot.

  14. The Archaeological Museum The exhibitions of The Archaeological Museum are displayed in the building of the former Maria Luiza Girls’ High School. It houses world’s most ancient gold treasure. It dates to 4600-4200 BC- more than 7000 years ago. The treasure was accidentally discovered during excavations for an underground cable near Varna in 1972. It is hard to imagine how long these gold objects and jewellery had been underground beforethe historians and archaeologists worldwide started talking about the treasureof Varna Necropolis.

  15. The Naval Museum There is a collection of shipping tools, the old Varna port lighthouse and one of the first Bulgarian minesweepers exhibited in the park. The most valuable exhibit is the Drazki (Intrepid) torpedo-boat, which has become famous for the torpedoing of the huge Turkish cruiser Hamidie during the First Balkan War of 1912.That is the only preserved ship of this type.

  16. The Natural-Science Museum TheNatural-Science Museum in Varna studies the organisms of the Bulgarian part of the Black Sea coast and is divided in three departments: Geology, Flora and Fauna. The Roman baths The Roman baths is the largest ancient public building discovered in Bulgaria so far. The comparatively well-preserved walls outline an imposing building. The interior stairs and the doorframeswere made of large stone blocks and there are preserved parts of magnificent mosaics in some places.Having passed through spacious halls, which create a natural barrier to the cold air, the visitors of the baths enter a huge hall called balestra. The Roman Terms are among the largest in the European part of the Roman Empire.

  27. The Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre In 1909 the teacher of literature Ivan Tzerov was elected a mayor of Varna.He proposed the immediate construction of a theatre hall in the city at the first City Council meeting. A place to build the hall was chosen the same year. The project of one of the architects who designed the National Theatre in Sofia, was approved after a contest.
