Courtney (20 yrs.) • Teaching at Troy for over 18 years • Previous job: Surgical nurse for 10 years • College attended: CSU Fullerton • Degrees: BA Biology w/minor in Chemistry • Enjoy: baseball, football, backpacking, fishing, camping and family time

  5. Purpose & Goals of the Class • To encourage, empower, and stimulate an interest in science. • Inform students about science • To shape students into: • critical thinker • good communicators • life-long learners • Prepare for the AP and IB exams in May

  6. Requirements/Pre-Requisites • Received a “B” or better in a previous biology class • Received a “C” or better in Chemistry • Passed/concurrently enrolled in algebra II • Hopefully taken a physics class and passed with a “C” or better.

  7. Seating Arrangement & Rules • Randomly selected at beginning of year • Changed only by the instructor if special needs are evident. • Seats will be reassigned every quarter with students seated in the front half of the class switched with those in the back. • Do not move your seat because you could be marked absent. The seating chart is used to take the daily role. • Do not Write on the lab bench tops or the wood board.

General Responsibilities • Be prepared, attentive, and on-time EVERDAY • Be organized • Be respectful (Treat others as you would like to be treated) • Know your limitations • Be honest with yourself and others (don’t cheat) • Own up to and learn from your mistakes & failures • Budget your time wisely • Electronic devices (cell phones or i-pods) are not to be used in class unless I give permission (Part pts. Can be lost) • All cell phones are to be turned off and out of site. They will be placed in the baskets in front you on Test/Quiz days. • No chewing gum, drinking, or eating food (except H20) • Raise your hand for Q & A and any discussions we have

Participation Grade • Worth 25 points • Given at the end of the semester (Jan. & Jun.) • Helps to raise your grade approx. 0.5% ex. 805/900 = 89.4% B+ vs. 835/930 = 89.8% A- • Lose pts: Unprepared, tardiness, eating/drinking, or extra hall passes. • Lose pts: having ipods, cell phones, electronic games etc. • Earn pts: participating in class, any extra time spent beyond normal class period, any contributions that benefit the class, or any hall passes not used. *Maximum amount is 25 points.

  10. Tardy Policy • Tardy: not present in the classroom One minuteafter the bell rings. (see stopwatch in front of class) • Must sign the TARDY LOG-your proof of being present that day. (front of class in glass window) • Unexcused Tardy: if you have no note (loss of pts) **Always bring a note if your late** • Lose participation points (5 pts per tardy) • Could result in a unexcused absence if not resolved (Cutting class) • Lose high school credit after 3 cuts.

Tardy Log • Located by the door entrance in the window • Must always be signed and dated with the period you are in if ever late to class with or without a note. • Write legibly or else you will receive a “0” for your participation grade. • If you have a note, place on the front and clip it to the board. Be sure to write a check in the note column.

  12. Hall Passes • You cannot leave the class without my approval. • Always ask for the pass at the appropriate time. • You are allotted TWO Hall Passes per semester. **You must sign in on the clipboard and take the Hall pass with you. • Only one pass is given at a time. • Sign in on the Hall pass Clip board and indicate the time and place you are going. • Any extra passes you use = 5 pts are lost on participation grade

Grading Policy • Points will be earned for: -Tests, Quizzes, Labs, Video notes, Study Guides and all other written assignments. • Points earned will be divided by total possible points to generate a percentage. • The percent score will fall into a range and a letter grade assigned. • Grades will be updated on the Aries website after every major test and quiz. • Grades will weighted as follows: • Test & Quizzes =70% • Labs =20% • Assignments/Hmwk./classwork =10%

  17. Make-up Policy • Late work can be made up but will be deducted 20% for each day late. After 5 days its worth zero points. • If turned in same day later after stamp-loss of 10% • All students must attach a copy of their attendance record highlighting the missed day and showing that the absence has been excused absence. (USE the ABI System) • The work must be handed to me personally. • Excused absences are given the same amount of time to make up work for the days missed (district policy) • Make up Tests will be given EVERY other WEDNESDAY during lunch and after school. (6th period is available) • The make up Test will have a different format and will not be multiple choice. • Labs-may or may not be made up depending on availability of materials. You must see me about your options.

Assessments that will be Given • Reading Quizzes (1-3 sect. in a chap.)= 5-12 pts • Online Assignments = 2 pts. each • Mid-unit quizzes (35 Quest.) = 35 pts. • Unit Test (75 Quest. @ 2 pts. each) = 150 pts (FOUR unit tests per semester) **Note: each unit test will have previous material from past units. Final Exams (100 quest. @ 2pts. each) = 200 pts. ***Note: Both finals are Cumulative

  29. Other Points about the Class You must check your work routinely Always work with correct, accurate information. Don’t rely on other students. Each chapter takes about 3-5 days Not all concepts/terms will be covered in the chapters. Only what is covered in class will be required. Stick to what’s discussed in class and presented on videos. Doing all of the IQ’s and assessing yourself using the online textbook site will be extremely helpful.

Daily Routine for each Unit • Pre Read Textbook (usually for homework) • Take Reading Quiz for the section(s) you read • Printout power point slides-optional • Do all Introductory Questions (IQ’s) given each day (major topics and concepts) These are a daily record of material covered in the class (**worth pts) • Add class notes to your IQ’s as we discuss the concepts of the Chapter • Do the Textbook end of chapter questions - answer and grade (optional) • Do the Online Quiz for the chapter must be done and submitted online (2 pts possible for each chapter) • Labs (1-3), Formal quizzes, practice quizzes given • Repeat cycle above for rest of the chapters covered in the unit. (ex. Unit #1: covers Ch. 1-5) • Cumulative unit test Online covering key concepts for all chapters in the unit-Mandatory (5 pts) • Formal Unit test (75 multiple choice Questions= 150 pts) ***Self-Assessment and routine checks for understanding is vital toward your success in this class.
