  1. Presents Silence! The Court is in Session A play by Vijay Tendulkar • The Playwright: Vijay Tendulkar’s (1928—2008) • writing over a period of five decades includes thirty full length plays, seven one acts, six collections of children’s plays, four of short stories, two novels, and seventeen film scripts. He was a giant among the modern Indian playwrights—a subtle observer of Indian social reality, a humanist, an innovative playwright who continuously experimented with form and structures. The Play: The play is a social satire on middle class society’s hypocrisy. It was originally written in Marathi (Shantata! Court ChaluAahe) in 1963. The play has since been translated into some sixteen languages in India and abroad. B.B.C. showed its English version, filmed by Satyadev Dubey. It is set as a play-within-a-play, where a travelling amateur theatre group is set to enact an amateur play (staged as a mock court) in a village hall. • The Director: Dr. SriramBakshi received a diploma from the Asian Theatre Institute, New Delhi, and PhD from the Univ. of Kansas. In the Department of Theatre, SUNY College at Brockport, he taught dramatic literature, theatre history, theory and criticism, and improvisational theatre and directed and acted in a few plays from 1970 – 2000.
