  1. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS J Y Lesson 3 for the 16th of January, 2010

  2. WHATISJOY? Joy is inner happiness that comes from the Lord. It can only be reached by having fellowship with Him. • Joy emerges when we perceive the presence of God in our lives. Then we can rise over the circumstances and concentrate on God’s goodness and love.

  3. WHENSHOULDWEREJOICE? “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians, 4: 4 “God’s love, God’s consideration and God’s power are the same in grief and in prosperity. The power of Christ can provide peace to the heart in any circumstance. The heart that takes refuge in Him can rejoice continuously”. SDABibleCommentary, vol. 7, onPhilippians, 4: 4

  4. REASONSFORREJOICING • Thejoy of Salvation. “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me”. (Psalm51: 12) The joy of the presence of God. “In Your presence is fullness of joy;At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore”. (Psalm16: 11) Rejoicing at God’swork. “For you make me gladby your deeds, O Lord;I sing for joy at the work of your hands”. (Psalm92: 4)

  5. REASONSFORREJOICING • Thefuturejoy. “And the ransomed of the Lord will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away” (Isaiah, 35: 10) The joy of studying God’s Word. “Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jeremiah, 15: 16) The joy of announcing the Gospel. “Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice” (Philippians, 1: 18)

  6. REASONSFORREJOICING • The joy of the conversion of the unbeliever. “So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren” (Acts, 15: 3) The joy of knowing that others are firm in the truth. “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth” (3 John, 1: 4) El gozo de creer en Jesús. “Though you have not seen him [Jesus], you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter, 1: 8)]]

  7. REASONSFORREJOICING The joy of keeping God’s commandments. “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart” (Psalm19: 8) “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands” (Psalm112: 1) “For I delight in your commandsbecause I love them” (Psalm119: 47) “If your law had not been my delight,I would have perished in my affliction” (Psalm119: 92) “Your statutes are my heritage for ever; they are the joy of my heart” (Psalm119: 111)

  8. JOY WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOING WRONG THEEXAMPLE OF CHRIST What strengthened Jesus when He had to withstand the suffering in the Earth? “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews, 12: 2) “He shall see the labour of His soul, and be satisfied” (Isaiah, 53: 11) Jesus fixed His eyes in our redemption. The joy of imagining everyone who will be redeemed living near Him helped Him in withstanding His sorrows.

  9. “Ever before Him, Christ saw the result of His mission. His earthly life, so full of toil and self-sacrifice, was cheered by the thought that He would not have all this travail for nought. By giving His life for the life of men, He would restore in humanity the image of God. He would lift us up from the dust, reshape the character after the pattern of His own character, and make it beautiful with His own glory. Christ saw of the travail of His soul and was satisfied. He viewed the expanse of eternity and saw the happiness of those who through His humiliation should receive pardon and everlasting life. He was wounded for their transgressions, bruised for their iniquities. The chastisement of their peace was upon Him, and with His stripes they were healed. He heard the shout of the redeemed. He heard the ransomed ones singing the song of Moses and the Lamb. Although the baptism of blood must first be received, although the sins of the world were to weigh upon His innocent soul, although the shadow of an unspeakable woe was upon Him; yet for the joy that was set before Him He chose to endure the cross and despised the shame” E.G.W. (Maranatha, chapter 308)

  10. JOY WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOING WRONG Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians, 7: 4 that “in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds”. How can we have joy in our troubles? Firstly, because our faith is based on the work that god did for us in the past, on His constant presence in our lives and on everything we know He will do in the future. Secondly, because of the joy of helping others and carrying the message of salvation to them.

  11. “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” Nehemiah, 8: 10
