  8. Some statistics…

  9. In 1990 Latinos comprised 9% of the U.S. population.

  10. By 2050 the largest minority population in U.S. classrooms will be Latino with 30%.

  11. In Georgia the surge in Latino population is not limited to K-12 students… 7.5% of the population is Latino Georgia is the number one state in the nation for the fastest growth in Latino populations.

  12. Recent estimates indicate that 90% of the total K-12 public student population was born in _____________. the United States

  13. In 2003-04 approximately 11% of the total K-12 public student population received English to Speakers of Other Languages services.

  14. Over 3.8 million children

  15. In Georgia…nearly one out of every 10 residents ages 5 and older speaks a language other than English at home with Spanish having the greatest representation.Census 2000

  16. In Georgia, between 1993 - 2005 Limited English Proficient student enrollment increased ___%. 397

  17. In 1989 in Cobb County there were 100 ESOL students from 20 countries. Today there are 8000+ from over 130 countries.

  19. Why ESOL? All students legally and morally deserve an appropriate education.

  20. It’s the Law! Lau v. Nichols (1974) • Unanimous Supreme Court decision • “sink or swim” instruction violates Civil Rights of language minority children • School districts required to provide specialized English instruction • “students who do not understand English are effectively foreclosed from any meaningful education”

  21. The Law!! Plyer v. Doe (1982) “States are prohibited from denying a free public education to undocumented immigrant children regardless of their immigrant status.”

  22. What can you do? Remember… a smile transcends all language barriers.
