  1. Error and Nerf Guns

  2. Nerf Guns • Who is more accurate? • Who is more precise? • Is there a difference?

  3. Accurate and Precise

  4. Accuracy & Precision

  5. Systematic Errors Systematic Errors in a single direction (high or low) Can be corrected by proper calibration or running controls and blanks. Examples Instrument not ‘zeroed’ properly Reagents made at wrong concentration

  6. Random Errors Random Errors in any direction. Can’t be corrected. Can only be accounted for by using statistics. Examples Temperature in room varies wildly. Person working in the lab is not trained.

  7. Accuracy & Precision with Error • Systematic Errors reduce accuracy • Random Errors reduce precision

  8. Calculating Percent Error • Indicates your accuracy of a measurement. literature value – experimental % error = ----------------------------------------------- x 100% experimental
