  2. Gabriela Mistral was born on April 7, 1889 in Vicuña, Chile Gabriela died on January 10,1957 in the U.S.

  3. Gabriela was born into poverty. • Born as Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga • She was abandoned by her father at 3 years old. • By age 15, Gabriela supported her family. • Her lover, a young railway worker, committed suicide, which she told of in “Dolor”

  4. Gabriela went to school for three years at 9 years old. • She earned a degree for teaching as an adult • She was the first Latin American woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945
