  1. Tips for Avoiding Emergency Medicine Burnout

  2. Working in emergency medicine is stressful for even the most experienced health care professionals. However, to continue providing the highest quality of care to your patients, it is critical that you take steps to avoid a burnout. Luckily, there are many simple things you can do to ensure that you always bring your best.

  3. You will experience situations that make you feel desperate. For instance, it may seem like you’ll never be able to stop a patient from bleeding. When something like this happens, the best thing you can do is stay calm. Only by keeping your cool can you offer the medical attention your patient needs. Stay Calm

  4. Remember that every situation, however terrible in the moment, will not last. Push through the hard times — later you will be going home.

  5. It is impossible to get on with everyone all the time, but when you’re working in emergency medicine, you sometimes need to put this behind you. Be nice to your team members even if your personalities clash sometimes. Create a Positive Environment

  6. If you strive to be friendly to everyone, you’ll work more efficiently. This will lead to better care for your patients and you’ll feel happier at the end of the day.

  7. It is easy to fall into habits or just accept what you hear, but a better approach is to constantly learn and try to improve. Research best practices and common myths to experiment with new ideas or techniques. Question Your Practices

  8. When you work in health care, training never ends. Consider taking an emergency medical responder (EMR) course. Alberta medical professionals often take this course specifically to avoid burnout. Another to consider is a first aid instructor course. Such a course will allow you to advance in your career and share your knowledge with others. Keep Up With Your Training

  9. If you become too focused on your career, you’ll be more likely to burn out. Maintain social relationships and spend time with your family. Participate in hobbies that have nothing to do with medicine but allow you to pursue your interests and passions. Have a Life Outside of Emergency Medicine

  10. Finally, make sure that at least one of your activities outside of work involves exercise. Staying fit will help both your body and mind avoid stress. When you prevent a burnout, you are able to provide the best quality of care. Employ all the above tips to keep stress at bay.
