  1. Picture This! SPI 0501.7.2 Determine the main idea in a visual image.

  2. Look closely at this picture:

  3. What is the setting of the picture? • What time period do you think it is from? • What details do you notice? • Do you notice the people? What is their size in relation to the structure? • What kind of flag is flying?

  4. By focusing on the whole picture first, and then the details, you can determine the main idea of the picture. This is a picture of Fort Sumter (in South Carolina) during the Civil War. The men are preparing the fort for war.

  5. What feeling do you get when you look at this picture? • Look at their clothes and their shelter. • Look at the expression on the woman’s face. • What is the setting of the picture?

  6. This is a picture of a family during the Great Depression of the 1920’s. They have traveled from their home in the Dust Bowl and are homeless. The picture is showing you how hopeless the people felt during this time.

  7. Look at the people in the picture. Some are in uniform and some are not. • Some are huddled together and look nervous or scared. • What is the setting? What time period do you think this was taken in?

  8. This is a picture of Jews in Krakow during World War II. They are scared of the German soldier and are traveling together in groups. This picture shows how scared the Jewish people were during World War II.

  9. Interview • Pick one of the pictures and pretend you are going to interview the people in it. • Fill out an interview plan sheet with questions. • Write a newspaper article using historical facts about the picture and making up quotes from the people.
