  1. Cylinders

  2. Parts of a cylinder

  3. Types of cylinders and their function • Single acting Cylinder-- a cylinder in which fluid dorce is applied to only one side of a piston to move the element in only one direction • Double acting Cyliner-- a cylinder in which fluid force can be applied to the movable element in either direction

  4. Kinds of cylinders • Telescoping Cylinder-- in forklifts-cranes • Double acting double end rod--rod on each end--provide force in both directions • Cushion Cylinder-- keeps item from coming to a hard stop--slowly releases fluid at one end • Stepped Cylinder--provides for a rapid start

  5. Rating system of Cylinders • Book discusses a number system (see text) • Most important is by diameter of cylinder • (piston head) • Also by stroke length • length from pin to pin • mounting pins • One on each end –1) cylinder housing 2) on rod

  6. Identify the schematic symbols of the common type of cylinders

  7. Telescoping Cylinders

  8. List five service tips for properly maintaining cylinders • External leaks • internal leaks • creeping of a cylinder-moves • sluggish operation • loose mounting • lack of lubrication • burns on rod • blocked air vents

  9. Describe the procedure for bleeding a hydraulic cylinder • Work the system back and forth until air is worked out or bleed the lines out
