  1. NovaChip

  2. What is NovaChip • Ultra-thin polymer modified asphalt surface treatment. • Combines open graded hot mix asphalt with emulsified asphalt polymer-modified membrane.

  3. Features & Benefits • Superior bond to the existing surface • Increases skid resistance, reduces noise • Ultra-thin application eliminates the need for utility adjustments. • Minimal traffic disruption, requires a single lane closure • Expected life cycle of up to ten years with crack sealing.

  4. Features & Benefits (cont..) • Does not affect overhead clearances on bridges, overpasses, signs, and other structures. • Reduces hydroplaning and reduces spray on wet roadways.

  5. Equipment • Specialized NovaChip paver • Rollers • Water truck

  6. Materials • Open graded hot mix asphalt • NovaBond, a polymer modified asphalt emulsion.

  7. History of NovaChip • 1988 - First trial in France • 1992 - Introduced in the United States • 1992-93 - Projects in TX, AL, PA, and NJ.

  8. Application Rates • Novabond(TM) emulsion membrane 0.13 - 0.25 gal/sy • Ultra-thin hot mix asphalt overlay • Minimum application rates: Type A - 45-55 lbs./sy Type B - 50-65 lbs./sy Type C - 55-70 lbs./sy • Total Thickness: 3/8 to 3/4” • Maximum recommended thickness: 1-1/4”

  9. Road Preparation for NovaChip • Pavement should be in reasonably good condition. • Pavement should be swept clean • Pavement should be dry before lay-down. • Crack seal all cracks ¼” wide or more • Repair all failed areas with full depth Patching. • Cover all utilities

  10. Applications for NovaChip • Asphalt pavements • Concrete pavements • Airports • Interstate highways • Turnpikes
