Warrnambool Automotive Industry Committee IPP. • Increase students and teachers understanding of the career opportunities in the Warrnambool Automotive industry. • Assist in developing a plan redressing the skill shortage in the Automotive industry. • Examine our own school technology curriculum in light of the IPP – specifically incorporating skill sets in demand by employers.

  4. Skills Shortage: • Industry not attracting students with the right skill sets in terms of ability, problem solving skills, work ethic, learning skills to be successful in this industry. • Typically costs the Employer $40,000 pa to train an Apprentice.

  5. Skills Shortage: • Employers experiencing difficulty in selecting suitable students and lack an understanding of the “Y” generation in terms of work flexibility and employer expectations. • Solution: Establishment of the WAIC in 2006 to act as a forum to discuss these issues and propose solutions.

  7. IPP Project - Details • Learn about the challenges faced by the Automotive Industry in recruiting the most suitable young people. • Learn about the skills set required in a digital era automotive service centre. • Develop a plan or response to these challenges.

  8. What is the Industry looking for? • Able to demonstrate a genuine interest in an Automotive career. • Work Experience. • Automotive Hobbies. • School Based Apprenticeship. • Ambition to succeed. • Understanding of career pathways within the Automotive industry.

  9. What is the Industry looking for? • Ability to learn new skills quickly. • Ability to communicate effectively with fellow workers and customers – • Written, verbal. • Ability to use digital technology. • Ability to problem solve.

  12. Automotive Industry – Multi skilling • You cannot rely on computer technology to solve all your problems • Being an auto electrician and mechanic is an obvious skill set in the digital workshop.

  13. Automotive Industry loosing Experience it cannot replace ! • Experienced new vehicle technician moved to TAFE as Automotive teacher. • Many are moving to WA mining industry boom earning $100,000 pa.

  14. Promoting Automotive Career Pathways in Warrnambool • Target Interested students at Year 8 via Industry visits. • Brauer College. • Emmanuel College. • Warrnambool College.

  17. Automotive Industry Open Day 2008 • Students / Parents who would like to follow up the visit will be offered an Interview and personal tour with a Principal at the industry Open day in 2008.
