  1. Create a Web Site with Publisher 2000 for Marilyn Seguin’s Class

  2. First – A word about Pictures • Pictures for a web page need to be: • Small enough file size to load quickly. • Depends on number of pictures on a single web page • Generally, file size should be under 50 to75 kb / image. • JPEG format for Photographs or GIF format for limited color images, “gif” images with transparent backgrounds or “gif” animations. • Usually “scanned” images should be scanned at ~75 d.p.i. resolution. Actual image size = Screen image size • Digital cameras should use lower resolution settings.

  3. Publisher 2000 vs. Publisher XP • Open Publisher, follow instructions, make style choices from design templates. There are some differences however between the way Publisher 2000 and the way Publisher 2002 (XP) work. • If your using Publisher 2000: • Web Wizard will help you create a number of pages before you start. • You can edit each page: replacing, deleting or adding text and images. • If your using Publisher 2002 (or Publisher XP): • Only creates “home page” from start-up. You have to insert all new pages. • If you use one of the IS labs, the library computers or the Student Multimedia Studio, then you will be using Publisher XP.

  4. Publisher 2000 - Start up • Open Publisher 2000 • Select Publication by Wizard tab • Select Web Sites wizard • Select a Web Site template icon • Click on Start Wizard

  5. Publisher 2000 – Wizard choices • Click Next in Web Site Wizard window • Choose from wizard then click next after each selection • Color Scheme, • Additional Pages, • Forms, • Navigation Bar, • Sound, • Texture and • Personal Information – click Finish • SAVE YOUR WORK • 1st use SAVE AS (will save as a publisher file so you can reopen it and make changes later. • Then, use SAVE AS WEB PAGE (saves as web pages – not “easily” edited in publisher) • ALWAYS save both ways. Save after you make any changes both ways, too!

  6. Personalizing “Wizard” Pages • Change Page Titles - Menu bar text changes automatically • Replace Text / Pictures with your own • Right click image • Choose Change Picture (Retains size and location of the original picture) • Insert New Pictures or Text • Insert > Picture > From File (must resize to fit) • Use Text Frame Tool on Toolbar to insert new text block.

  7. Adding More Pages • Insert > Page • Select type of page • Check the ADD HYPERLINK TO WEB NAVIGATION BARThis will create a page using the type of page you’ve chosen with all the hyperlinks to the pages on your site. • More Options • Blank Pages • One Text Frame • Duplicate All Objects • Enter number of pages you want to insert • Choose Before or After Current Page • Check the ADD HYPERLINK TO WEB NAVIGATION BAR • Edit New Pages as described on “Personalizing Wizard Pages”

  8. Publisher 2000 – Hyperlinks • Image Hyperlinks • Right Click on Image then choose Hyperlink • Select from “Create Hyperlink To” options • Text Hyperlinks • Highlight Text to be Hyperlinked • Right click on selected text or use Hyperlink icon • Select from “Create Hyperlink To” options

  9. …using Publisher 2000 …using Publisher XP Save as Web PageHow different Publisher Versions save your Web Pages • The “homepage” is saved in the folder you select and a new folder is created to hold all images and added web pages. • Must name the “homepage” manually as “index.htm”. • All Web Pages AND Images go into one common folder. • Automatically names the “homepage”, index.htm

  10. Viewing your Web Site • You can use Web Page Preview at any time during the construction of your web site to see how it will look in a web browser like IE or Netscape. • You can also open the index.html file (this is your home page) directly from the folder where you saved the page. It will automatically open it in the default browser for the computer you’re using. • For this class… this is all you have to do. But if you want, you can upload your web site to Kent’s Personal Server, continue on….

  11. Uploading to Server • Can use WS_FTP LE or Secure Shell for Windows (SSH • Can download either of these programs free from: http://helpdesk.kent.edu/software/winme/wmetelnet.shtm (I recommend WS_FTP LE) • There’s an tutorial on how to use WS_FTP LE at http://act.kent.edu… tutorials link • MUST know user name and flashline password to log-in to server • If saved as a Publisher 2000 web page (site), you MUST transfer all web pages and images from common folder (where you saved the page) into public_html folder on the server • If saved as a Publisher XP web page (site), • You SHOULD have named the page when you saved it as a publisher document as index.html. Then, when you “save as a web page”, your home page will be given the filename, index.html. A folder will be created automatically called, index_files. You MUST transfer both the index.html file and the index_files folder into the public_html folder on the server. • If you make changes later: • You MUST transfer all web pages and any new images in the common folder (using Publisher 2000) or the index.html file and the index_html folder (if using Publisher XP) to the server each time you make a change to any of your web pages.
