LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Dr Fran Brearton School of English Modern Poetry Criticism • Dr Brearton’s work with broadcast and print media has had a tangible effect on the public appreciation of poetry, and Irish poetry in particular. • Her regular appearances on Radio 4’s ‘In Our Time’ reach a global audience of more than two million listeners. • Her work on ‘The Great War in Irish Poetry’ has helped address this often divisive issue.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor Roy Douglas School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering The Impact of Vehicle Modelling for City Buses • Professor Douglas’s team comprises world leading experts in modelling hybrid vehicles engines. • Their proactive engagement with Ballymena’s Wrightbus has led to this modelling being a key tool for Wrightbus engineers. • Wrightbus used this method as part of their winning bid for the ‘New Bus for London’ contract.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Dr Bhaskar Sen Gupta School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering Removing Arsenic from Groundwater • Dr Sen Gupta has developed a chemical-free method of removing Arsenic from groundwater, an issue affecting an estimated 137 million people worldwide. • His team has installed nine plants delivering clean water to over thirteen thousand people in India, Cambodia, Malaysia and the US.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor Joanne Hughes &Professor Tony Gallagher School of Education Shared Education: A Model for Divided Societies • Professor Hughes and Professor Gallagher’s Shared Education Programme provides a system to help bring together children educated under ethno-religious divisions. • Following success with sixteen thousand school children in Northern Ireland, the Programme is being further developed for Macedonia and Israel.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor David Jones School of Pharmacy A Preventative Treatment for Breakdown in Stoma Care • Professor Jones’ work has provided a material capable of helping patients avoid some of the painful side-effects of invasive bowel surgery. • Through collaboration with Comber’s TG Eakin Ltd, their ‘Cohesive paste’ has sold more than one million pounds worth of product, treating patients in twenty six countries.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor Adrian Long School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering The Adoption of Arching Research Carried out at Queen's • Professor Long used forty years of expertise in cement arches to assist London Underground with their platform design. • His scheme avoided unnecessary work estimated at two hundred million pounds, and several times that in disruption to London. • Professor Long went on to develop an arching product with Toomebridge’sMacrete Concrete, which is in active use across the UK and Ireland.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Dr Karl Malcolm & Professor David Woolfson School of Pharmacy A Microbicide Vaginal Ring to Protect Women Against HIV/AIDS • Dr Malcolm and Professor Woolfson have worked to provide a method for women to protect themselves from HIV/Aids, the number one cause of death for women aged 14 to 44 in sub-Saharan Africa. • Their product is currently undergoing phase three clinical trials, and has the potential to save millions of lives globally.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor ShaddMaruna School of Law The Desistance Theory and Offender Rehabilitation • Professor Maruna has engaged with justice systems from across the world to enact his world-leading theories on ex-offenders’ desistance from crime. • His models are having a direct, positive effect on the lives of ex-prisoners and the societies they live in from the UK to Canada, Singapore and the US.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor Phil Scraton School of Law The Hillsborough Independent Panel 2009-12 • Professor Scraton’s forensic analysis of the death of ninety six men, women and children in the Hillsborough disaster has led to an apology from the Prime Minister in Parliament and a review of the UK’s emergency response to disasters. • His continued engagement with the families of the bereaved and approach to the analysis have set a new precedent for how governments should respond to such events.

LOCAL TALENT, GLOBAL IMPACT Professor Kenneth Seddon School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Mercury Removal from Natural Gas Streams • Professor Seddon’s work with Malaysia’s Petronas has led to a new, more efficient way of removing Mercury from natural gas. • The HycaPure Hg system was developed from concept to pilot operation in two years. • The take up of this pioneering system will act to reduce the number of people whose health is affected by the presence of Mercury, or who are killed in incidents linked to Mercury induced damage.
