PavingtheWayforaSustainableFutureThroughUsedPETPlasticBottleRecyclingPavingtheWayforaSustainableFutureThroughUsedPETPlasticBottleRecycling • FestivalsinIndiaarecelebratedwithimmensedevotionandenergy,servingasatimeofjoy, unity,andtradition.However,thesegrandcelebrationsoftengeneratesignificantwaste,as largegatheringsleadtoincreasedconsumptionandthedisposalofitemslikebottles, containers,anddecorations. • AtHCCB,wesawthischallengeasanopportunitytotakeresponsibleenvironmentalaction. Byaddressingthewastegeneratedduringfestivals,weaimtosetaprecedentforhow collectiveeffortscancreategreenerandmoresustainablecelebrations. • WhatIsaPETBottleandWhyItPresentsaChallenge • OneofthemostsignificantcontributorstofestivalwasteisPET(Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles.Whilethesebottlesarelight,durable,andconvenient,theypose substantialenvironmentalchallengesifnotadequatelymanaged.Here’swhyPETplastic bottlesareaconcern: • Volume:LargefestivalsresultinmillionsofPETbottlesbeingused,significantly contributingtowaste. • Durability:PETbottles,ifnotrecycled,canpersistinthe environmentfor hundreds ofyears.

ResourceIntensive:ProducingnewPETbottles consumesasignificantamount of energyandrawmaterials. • Despitethesechallenges,PET’srecyclabilityoffershope.Whenproperlycollectedand processed,thesebottlescanberepurposed,reducingtheirenvironmentalimpactand conservingresources. • HowthePETPlasticBottleRecyclingProcessWorks • RecyclingPETbottlesinvolvesasystematicprocesstoensureplasticwasteisrepurposed effectivelyanddoesnotenduppollutingtheenvironment: • Collection:TheprocessbeginswiththegatheringofusedPETbottles through collectiondrivesandsystems,oftentiedtoourfestivalinitiatives. • SegregationandCleaning:Bottlesaresortedandcleanedtoremovecontaminants suchaslabelsandcaps. • ShreddingandPelletizing:Thecleanedbottlesareshreddedintosmallflakes,which arethenmeltedandturnedintopellets. • RecyclingandRepurposing:Thesepelletsareusedtomanufacturenewproducts, includingbottles,clothingfibers,andmore,reducingthedemandforvirginplastic. • Byensuringpropercollectionandrecycling,wecantransformwasteintoavaluable resourceandclosethe loop. • OurSustainableVisioninActionatthePuriRath Yatra • ThePuriRathYatra,oneoftheworld’soldestand largestfestivals,presentedaunique challengeandanopportunityforsustainability.In2024,wepartneredwiththeDistrict AdministrationandPuriMunicipalitytolaunchthegroundbreaking‘UsedPETBottle-Free’ initiative. • HighlightsofOur Initiative: • StrategicCollectionPoints:Wesetupcollectionpointsalongkeylocationssuchas Badadanda,theRailwayStation,andtheBusStand. • Round-the-ClockSupport:Helpdesksoperated24/7toguideattendeesandensure smoothcollectionandtransportationofwaste. • 1000+ Volunteers:Over1,000volunteerswereactivelyinvolvedinspreading awareness,assistingwithcollection,andpromotingsustainability. • Collaborations:Wepartneredwith organizationsliketheY4DFoundation,Odisha • StatePollutionControlBoard,andtheFoundationforClimateProtection(FCP)to amplifytheinitiative’sreachandimpact.

Thisinitiativenotonlyaddressedwastemanagementduringthefestivalbutalsoreinforced the importanceofsustainabilityatlargepublicgatherings. • ExtendingOurEffortstoOtherFestivals GaneshChaturthi • InspiredbythesuccessatPuri,weextendedsimilareffortstoMumbai’sGaneshChaturthi celebrations throughthe‘UsedPET Bottle-FreeGanpatiCelebration’ initiative. • KeyActionsTaken: • DeploymentofvolunteersacrossprominentpandalslikeChinchpokliCha Chintamani, Parel ChaRaja,andParelChaMaharaja. • CollaborationwithAnandana,TheCoca-ColaIndia Foundation,andtheY4D Foundation. • Focusedeffortsoncollecting,sorting,andrecyclingusedPETbottles. • Dussehra • ThegrandMysuruDasara,a10-daycelebrationattractingthousandsoftouristsand devotees,wasanotheropportunitytopromotesustainability.Incollaborationwiththe MysuruCityCorporationandAnandana:TheCoca-ColaIndiaFoundation,welaunchedthe “UsedPETBottle-FreeDasaraCelebration.” • KeyMeasuresImplemented: • Strategicplacementofcollectionbinsandrecyclingstationsatkeylocationssuchas ChamundiHillsandAaharaMela. • Deploymentofdedicatedvolunteersforwastemanagement. • Collaborationwithlocalpartnersforefficientcollectionandtransportation. • Systematicsegregationandrecyclingthroughdesignatedpartners. • ScalingOurVisionforSustainableCelebrations • We’recommittedtoexpandingtheseinitiativestofestivalsacrossIndiathroughstrategic partnerships,communityengagement,andsystematicwastemanagementapproaches.
