The paper described processes for improving the reading comprehension of nine fifth grade students The problem of poor reading comprehension was documented using an observation checklist, a 2006 fourth grade literacy test, and a needs assessment instrument. Analysis of possible causes revealed two main factors: the lack of systematic direct instruction, and students not possessing adequate reading comprehension strategies.

A review of solution strategies presented by experts will result in a possible intervention program Likely strategies to be used as part of the program are: Before reading strategies: to establish a purpose for reading • Story impressions *Open house • Semantic webs *Anticipation guides • Semantic feature analysis *Probable passage 1 • RIVET

  4. During reading strategies: read the written text • Literature circles • Save the last word for me • Read, rate and rereads • Reciprocal teaching • Transactional strategy instruction • Jig-saw • Direct reading thinking activity

  5. After reading strategies: to check for understanding of text • Question answer relationships(QAR) • Cloze passage • Role, audience, format topic (RAFT) • Generating Instruction between Schemata and Text (GIST)

  6. Persons responsible for conducting the evaluation The class teacher and the researcher will be responsible for carrying out the evaluation process. Tools to be used include: • An observation checklist • UWI Diagnostic Test-Pre and Post Test (grade five section) • Video taping students • Teacher-student conferences • Teacher journal entries

  7. The results will be used to help bring about changes for the better in the teaching of reading comprehension especially for upper elementary school students
