  1. Finding a Journal Article or Book Review Print Sources

  2. Here are some of the results for a keyword search in the ATLA Religion database on “political theology.”

  3. The publication type for this item is Article and it has a link to the full text in PDF format. Click here to access the full text article.

  4. The publication type for this item is Review and it also has a link to the full text in PDF format. Click here to access the full text of the review. This note tells us that Stitt Library also owns the print version of this journal.

  5. This result is a also a book review, but it is not available as full text online. You will need to find a print source. You can tell the full text is not available, because there is no link to a full text version like the links we saw in the previous examples.

  6. The Source part of the citation gives us the name of the journal in which the article is found. In this case, the name of the journal is Journal of Ecclesiastical History.

  7. There is also a note that APTS Stitt Library owns this journal in print form. This note tells us that Stitt Library owns the print version of this journal.

  8. Check the Online Catalog • It is good practice to check holdings (a term referring to the books and journals owned by the Library) on all sources of interest that aren’t available in full text. • Because not all of Stitt Library’s holdings are entered into the ATLA Religion database, we might have something even if there isn’t an “APTS Stitt Library Owns” note in the record.

  9. To see if our library has a copy of the book, open the Joint Library online catalog at http://voyager.austinseminary.edu Click on “Basic search” to go to the search screen

  10. Enter the title found under Source in the citation record as a title search in the Joint Library Catalog.

  11. Both Austin Seminary and the Seminary of the Southwest have this journal “APTS Stitt Library” indicates that the journal is at Stitt Library. Click on the journal title for more information.

  12. The record that comes up gives valuable information about what years and issues of the journal the Library has. The Recent Issues section lists recent volumes of the journal that have been received but are not yet bound. The Older Issues section tells you the volumes and years of the journal that we have at Stitt Library as bound volumes.

  13. It also gives the call number in the stacks (a term for the shelves in the library) for the bound volumes of the journal. Use this number to locate the physical volume. This is the call number. Bound journals are shelved in with the books, according to their call number. The PER means that this is a periodical. The call number is BR140 J6. The volumes listed in Recent Issues can be found with current periodicals in the reference room.

  14. Back in the ATLA Religion Database, check the rest of the information given in the Source area of the citation: These are the page numbers. In this case, pages 529-530. This is the volume number and date of the journal. In this case, volume 59, number 3 from July 2008.

  15. Comparing the volume and date with the catalog record shows that the Library has the print volume you need. You can get it from the shelf and read or copy it. The ATLA Religion Database listed volume 59, number 3, July 2008 as the issue we want. And that fits in the range in the Older Issues section of the catalog record.
