Purpose from the lab Allow interactive communication between members of the Egyptian team (professors and graduate students) and all members of the other three teams above during the teaching program, which includes eight courses, participate equally between four scientific institutes, half will be developed under the current programmes of these institutions, and the other half be fully developed in order to serve the future development of those programmes. 13

Introduction The over all objective of exchange program from the Egyptian side is to expose the students to the new knowledge, educational methodologies, technologies and techniques in other courses prepared by other teams specially the ones in Volos, Thessaly University and IAMM in the context of FORMDER project. This is to let students understand how these aspects are applied and used in the area of rural development in other countries and their implications that could be transferred in the case of Egypt. For the junior teacher this will help him for getting more details about how to adapt some of such techniques in the courses prepared by the Egyptian team.

  18. The Objectives The objective from training of students will be different from that of the young teacher. • To recognize the general outline of other courses prepared in the context of the project that might help them whether in the development of their own careers or orienting them towards joining post graduate studies for enhancing their professional experience at higher level; post graduate diploma, M.Sc. or Ph.D levels. • Contacts and exposure of the students to the contents of other courses prepared by other institutes in the same discipline in other countries to help establishing new professional linkages among future young rural development practitioners and researchers between Egypt and the countries involved in FORMDER. • Mobilization of attention of students to the other learning potential opportunities in the same area in other FORMDER institutes.

Objectives (cont.) • For the young teacher it is expected that by the end of training he should get the main experience from the Greek team in utilizing the GIS and any other related and relevant techniques for application in the instruction of the courses pertaining to rural development. • New insights are expected from exposure of the young teacher to the experiences of the Greek and/or French teams. • The basic knowledge and experience he has in GIS will help him benefit fast from such training.

Objectives (cont.) • Mutual contacts and discussions among our students and the students of other institutes in Greece, France, and Morocco will provide an actual and real opportunity or the exchange of knowledge and experiences that will enhance the integrity of educational programs for our students. This will open up new prospects for our students in connection with their careers and self-learning in the future. • The experience of the Greek partners in preparation of their courses with intensive use of GIS applications is of special interest to be transferred in the case of Egypt in the evaluation and leadership courses.

  21. Time and Duration of the Training • Two weeks (30 hours per week) started from 6/5/2007 till 20/5/2007

Targeted groups 1- Undergraduate students in the final semester for graduation in the community Development Program (6 to 9 depending on their achievement in the last semester 2006/2007). 2- Graduate students studying the one year program of “Planning and Evaluation of Rural Development Projects” (3 to 5 depending on their achievement in the last semester 2006/2007). 3- One young teacher with special skills in the use of micro-computing techniques.

  23. Criteria of selection of students for Mobility The following criteria were approved by the Department of Rural Sociology and Agricultural Extension Council for selection of the students eligible for mobility through the FORMDER project; 1- Average ‘B’ in the Social science related courses attended last semester, 2- Good command of English or French language, 3- Students registered for graduation in the last semester in their concerned program whether Egyptians or foreigners (3 Somalis). The same conditions were applied for the students registered in the Diploma of Planning and Evaluation of Rural Development Projects.

  24. Selection of Students for Mobility • The application of the above criteria for the nomination of the number of 11 participants was as follows: • 2 of the Diploma students. • 8 of undergraduate students from community development major. • A young staff member to participate in training and supervision of students.

  25. Academic preparation: A workshop was held to exchange personal experiences regarding the use of computers in the following areas: -  1 - the MS Excel 2 – GIS application & software: Arcview &ArcMap Attend a lecture on the GIS in Faculty GIS Laboratory Preparation of students before travel

  26. Administrative preparation The following procedures have been implemented under the supervision of Tempus work team in Egypt, financially supported from Tempus; Mail Group. International health insurance to the participants. visas from the Greek Consulate. booking tickets. Orientation of students before travel

  27. 1-Orientation Orientation of the objectives and procedures of the mobility program with general coordinator in Egypt before travel

  28. Administrative arrangements The following procedures were implemented under the supervision of Tempus team in Greece, financially supported from Tempus; Transportation from the airport to the hotel and return. Accommodation in a hotel near the University of Thessaly.

Many video conference sessions were held among the four partners participating in FORMDER to: - Deliver 4 lectures about the 4 updated courses in activity 2. - Have several life discussions about the managerial aspects of the project. Six M.Sc. theses undertaken under supervision of joint committees of staff from both the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Egypt and Al-Azhar University in Gaza Strip, Palestine were discussed through videoconferences sessions held in the e-communication labs (1) and (2).   49. Extended functioning of the E-communication lab (2) facilities in supporting academic activities of the faculty at international level (distance defense of joint supervised M.Sc. Theses between Faculty of Agriculture staff and Al-Azhar University in Gaza strip) Six sessions have been organized for this purpose so far

The micro-computing facilities of the two e-communication labs are used frequently in the applied courses in statistics and micro-computing applications for the under-graduate specialized in English section of community development and the graduate students in the diploma of “planning and evaluation of rural development projects”.
