  3. Sociocultural Psychology Theory Description Approach to studying alcohol abuse • Behaviour is viewed as being strongly influenced by the expectations of social groups or cultures • How does alcoholism differ among cultures? • What social pressures might cause alcohol abuse?

  4. Cognitive Approach Description Approach to studying alcohol abuse • Take information from environment • Analyze it • Come up with a solution to the problem • Behaviour is a product of internal sentences or thoughts • What thoughts lead up to episodes of heavy drinking? • If analyzed can drinking patterns be changed?

Humanism Description Approach to studying alcohol abuse • Behaviour viewed as a reflection of internal growth • Environment does not force us to become anything, it asks as a background for our internal growth • Do people drink because they don’t feel a sense of worth? Does alcohol provide a false esteem?

Psychoanalysis Description Approach to studying alcohol abuse • Behaviour is viewed as a reflection of unconscious aggressive and sexual impulses. • Is the heavy drinking happening because of a conflict raging in the unconscious? • Does drinking release inhibitions allowing the unconscious desires to surface?

  7. Behaviorism Description Approach to studying alcoholism • Behaviour is viewed as a product of learned responses. • Is alcoholism learned? • Can it be unlearned? • Can new habits replace drinking habits/
