  2. Introduction • HearMe is a voice over IP system. • It provides PC-to-PC, phone-to-PC and PC-to-phone voice communications over internet. • It is basically used for web conferencing.

  3. How it works • PC-to-PC: A small program is downloaded into each client machine and that program is used to encode and decode the voice in an industry standard, G.723.1. (higher fidelity G.711 also supported) When a client talks the voice is transmitted over the Internet to the server and then server transmits it to all other PC clients.

  5. How it works (2) • Phone-to-PC: A voice IP gateway is needed to connect the phone lines to the Internet. The gateway converts the analog voice to digital format and vice versa and communicates with the HearMe servers. These are available from CISCO for prices in $10K to $40K depending on number and quality of connections.

  7. How it works (3) • PC-to-Phone: In this case, a client does not join the conference, instead s/he is invited to the conference. So a special care is needed. A dedicated server, Bridge server handles the PC-to-phone connection. It also uses the gateway to connect the phone lines to the Internet.

  8. Standard Conference • HearMe provides two types of conference, standard and moderated. • In standard conference, every client has the same privileges including the conference creator. Anyone can talk at any time.

  9. Moderated Conference • In moderated conference, there are three types of users, moderator, panelist and participant. • Moderator is the creator of the conference and has full control over the presentation. • Panelists by default have right to talk. • Participants need permission of the moderator to talk.

  10. Archiving • HearMe plans that any conference can be archived and played back later. The archive can be accessed through the telephone or the internet. • We are producing a preliminary capability here

  11. Comparison • This approach has two advantages over the only PC-to-PC conferencing. First, It supports the telephony users. Second, in a conference, since the panelists will talk on the phones, it provides better voice quality. • This solution is also cheaper and more convenient than the teleconferencing.

  12. Conclusion • Supporting both telephony and internet users and providing good voice quality, makes HearMe an interesting choice for conferencing over the Internet. • Lipstream has similar technology, which HearMe claims is less advanced. Other players in field are eStara, WebDialogs and Net2Phone • Note HearMe just sold its core business (Internet Games) to focus solely on VOIP
