Project Description • CRC and Toft Woods were awarded a grant from the Delaware Estuary program of NFWF to significantly reduce the stormwater impact of TW’s 40 homes to Ridley Creek’s prized fly fishing only stretch. A dysfunctional stormwater basin and riser were redesigned by Cahill Associates for the 2 yr storm , and a shallow berm separated the intake from outlet structures to increase evapotranspiration & infiltration. • The basin was planted with native mixes of wet meadow and facultative grasses and flowers. Plugs were also added by TW, CRC, and Delco ManningTrout Unlimited volunteers. The wet area is providing excellent amphibian habitat!

One month after the reconstructed basin and berm was seeded with native mixes, volunteers planted plugs of sedges, rushes, and iris in the wet area.
Chris and Claire Larson (standing on berm) planted plugs in the wet part of the basin.

Rick Heimbecker planted sedges ( Carix spp) in the wet area.

Plants were also added to Toft Woods Rain Garden Josh Hunt, Mary Harmer, Kevin Lynch, & Drew Harmer planting an upland part of the rain garden at TW, which is fed by rainbarrels from four roofs.
Inspecting the new stormwater basin • Cynthia John of the Toft Woods Landscaping Committee, was the project manager for the redesign of the stormwater basin, as well as the installation of TW’s rain garden and rain barrels. To view the project, or get more info, please contact her or CRC.
