St John Ambulance: the beginning • In the 19th century, a group of citizens revived the Order of St John, drawing inspiration from the medieval knights of St John. • Now the work of St John is carried on in many countries around the world. • St John is a Royal Order of Chivalry, with the Queen as its Sovereign Head.

The St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital • The original order of St John hospital was established in Jerusalem in 1099. • The rate of blindness in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem is 10 times higher than in the West. • Much of this blindness is curable and preventable. • 98% of patients are Palestinian.

Outreach Clinic • We will get through • Outreach teams travel to remote, rural and impoverished towns and communities in the West Bank • Checkpoints and barriers are still in place • In 2010 teams saw 9443 patients, including 3541 children • Negotiated 862 referrals
