  1. SuPLight Sustainable Lightweight Solutions in the Transportation Sector

  2. Outline of the presentation: 1: Present the EU FP7 Project SuPLight2: Present the IMS MTP SuPLight Sustainable Lightweight Solutions in the Transportation Sector

  3. SuPLight Sustainable and efficient Production of Light weight solutions

  4. Small-scale collaborative project in FP7-NMP June 2011 – May 2014 Coordinator: SINTEF RaufossManufacturing Web-site: www.suplight-eu.org

  5. Rationale: • Lightweight component and solutions increasingly important • Aluminium have large potentials for dramatic weight reduction • Goals: • New industrial models for sustainable lightweight solutions • 75% recycling in high-end structural components • Product and process optimization with up to 50% increased weight/performance ratio • Bridge from atomic-scale to continuum FEM simulations • Novel business models with a holistic life cycle view and higher reactivity to customer • Lightweight solutions in a closed-loop life cycle perspective

  6. Consoritum

  7. WP1: Requirements and specifications for lightweight solutions WP2: Development of new wrought alloys with closed-loop recycling characteristics WP6: Validation of SuPLight technology WP7: Dissemination, internationalcollaboration and industrial innovation development WP3: Simulation based optimization of lightweight solutions WP4: Holistic life cycle approach WP5: Sustainable Industry models Project Structure

  11. Figure from A. Osterwalder - Business Model Generation, 2010 From Business Models to Industry Models Key Activities Customer Relationship Customer Segments Key Partners Value Proposition Key Resources Channels Cost Structure Revenue Streams SuPLight focuses the interdependencies between business model and industry model to offer a industrial added value in the three fields value chain opportunities, operational opportunities and financial opportunities. The enhancement of procedural and operative performance is the driver for following the industrial model.

  12. Project Status • Wrought alloys: Generic test components based on new wrought model alloys produced and tested • Simulation/optimisation: Framework for a holistic modelling approach established, including multi scale, multi discipline and optimisation. Plug-ins in progress. • LCA: Material (scenarios) and information flows have been determined • Industry modeling: Key factors are identified, Method „BETA“ (Business Ecosystem vs. Technology assessment) is concepted • Test cases for demo: Defined with respect to performance, sustainability (goals) objectives, & Industrial means for real production

  14. SuPLight IMS MTP PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY • New industrial models for sustainable lightweight solutions • 75% recycling in high-end structural components • Product and process optimization with up to 50% increased weight/performance ratio • Bridge from atomic-scale to continuum FEM simulations • Novel business models with a holistic life cycle view and higher reactivity to customer PARTICIPANTS IMS ACTIVITY • EPFL - CH • SINTEF RM - EU • SuPLightFP7 Consortium - EU • External EU partners • AccelorMittal • Quantis Intl. • NEMAK – MEX • ITESM - MEX • Cuprum – MEX • KITECH - KOR • Development of Community and definition of targeted actions • International Collaboration Workshops • Industrial testing pilots

  15. SuPLight Work Packages Sustainability • Development of Community and Definition of targeted actions • International Collaboration Workshops • Industrial Testing Pilots • Community Development • Industrial Pilot Testing • Collaboration Workshops

  17. SuPLight IMS MTP WP1 Development of Community and definition of targeted actions During this activity the core consortium will be built The main groups of interest in the involved IMS regions will be identified and target objectives will be defined. Contacts with the competent standardization working groups will be established in order to evaluate opportunities for contribution to relevant standards.

  18. International Collaboration Workshops The group will start a series of workshops to foster the exchange of knowledge and experiences related to the goals of the project Some these workshops will be held together with those of the targeted existing standardization actions, so as to support integration. 19. SuPLightIMS MTP WP3 Industrial testing pilots The concepts and models developed within the SuPLight FP7 project and within the expanded MTP Project team will be tested and verified within application scenarios. Industrial Pilots will take place in firms that are part of the FP7 SuPLight project and also in firms that are part of the larger MTP Project New Wrought Al Alloys testing New Al Extrusion Process Testing New Auto Parts Design Testing Model Testing

  20. SuPLight IMS MTP status • MoA signed by all parties • Ready to GO !! • 1st IMS meeting planned inQ1 2013 • Community Development • Industrial Pilot Testing • Collaboration Workshops
