  1. Romeo & Juliet in pop culture Romeo & Juliet VS. West side Story By: Jessica Krpejs

  2. West Side Story was a movie created in 1961 to illustrate a modern day version of the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Although there are variations between the two stories, they are very similar in many ways. For the forecasting part of my Romeo and Juliet project I focused on some of the music from West Side Story and how it related to the events in Romeo and Juliet. From each song I selected a few lines and then showed how it tied in with the story. Enjoy!

  3. Jet Song “When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way. From your first cigarette to your last dyin’ day.” “Then you are set with a capital J, which you’ll never forget till they cart you away. When you’re a Jet, you stay a Jet!” This song reminds me of the Montague household and the way the boys acted towards the Capulets. “You’re never alone, you’re never disconnected! You’re home with your own: when company’s expected, you’re well protected!” “When you’re a Jet, if the spit hits the fan. You got brothers around, you’re a family man!”

  4. Something’s Coming “Who knows? It’s only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach, under a tree. I got a feeling there’s a miracle due, gonna come true, coming to me!” “With a click, with a shock, phone’ll jingle, door’ll knock. Open the latch! Something’s coming, don’t know when, but it’s soon; catch the moon, one-handed catch!” This song reminds me of how Romeo had a feeling about meeting Juliet although his was a negative and Tony’s is positive. “Come on, something, come on in, don’t be shy, meet a guy, pull up a chair! The air is humming, and something great is coming! Who knows? It’s only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach, maybe tonight…” “Could it be? Yes, it could. Something’s coming, something good, if I can wait! Something’s coming, I don’t know what it is, but it is gonna be great!”

  5. Maria “I’ve just met a girl named Maria, and suddenly that name will never be the same to me.” “I’ve just kissed a girl named Maria, and suddenly I’ve found how wonderful a sound can be!” This song reminds me of Romeo after he has first met Juliet at the masquerade. “Say it loud and there’s music playing, say it soft and it’s almost like your praying.” “Maria, I’ll never stop sayin Maria! The most beautiful sound I ever heard. Maria.”

  6. One Hand, One Heart “Make of our hands, one hand, make of our hearts, one heart, make of our vows, one last vow: only death do us part now.” “Make of our lives, one life, day after day, one life.” This song reminds me of the scene when the Friar marries Romeo and Juliet. “Now it begins, now we start, one hand, one heart.” “Even death won’t part us now.”

  7. Tonight “Today, the minutes seem like hours, the hours go so slowly and still the sky is light.” “Tonight, tonight, won’t be just any night. Tonight there will be no morning star. “ This song reminds me of when Juliet is talking to herself awaiting the arrival of Romeo. “Moon, grow bright and make this endless day endless night.” “Tonight, tonight, I’ll see my love tonight. And for us, the stars will stop where they are.”

  8. I Feel Pretty “I feel pretty, oh so pretty. I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity any girl who isn’t me tonight.” “Modest and pure, polite and refined, well- bred and mature and out of her mind!” This song reminds me of the way Juliet felt after meeting Romeo. “See the pretty girl in that mirror there. What mirror, where? Who could that attractive girl be? Such a pretty face, such a pretty dress, such a pretty smile, such a pretty me!” “I feel stunning and entrancing, feel like running and dancing for joy, for I’m loved by a pretty wonderful boy!”

  9. Somewhere “Hold my hand and we’re halfway there. Hold my hand and I’ll take you there. Somehow, some way, someday!” “There’s a place for us, somewhere a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air, wait for us, somewhere.” This song reminds me of what must be going through Romeo and Juliet’s minds throughout the whole play. “There’s a time for us, some day a time for us. Time together with time to spare, time to learn, time to care. Some day!” “We’ll find a new way of living, we’ll find a way of forgiving. Somewhere.”

  10. A Boy Like That/ I Have A Love “A boy like that who’d kill your brother, forget that boy and find another, one of your own kind, stick to your own kind.” “When love comes so strong, there is no right or wrong, your love is your life.” This song reminds me of the relationship between Juliet and her nurse. “I hear your words and in my head I know they’re smart, but my heart, my heart Anita, knows they’re wrong and my heart is too strong, for I belong to him alone, to him alone.” “I have a love, and it’s a that I have. Right or wrong, what else can I do? I love him; I’m his, and everything he is I am, too.”
