Khulumani Forum Theatre Group. Formed in May 2012 Part of Khulumani Support Group Victim Empowerment Programme. Participants are young people from Soweto Repertoire of four productions Skilled and ready to make a difference in their community.

  2. Formed in May 2012 • Part of Khulumani Support Group Victim Empowerment Programme • Participants are young people from Soweto • Repertoire of four productions • Skilled and ready to make a difference in their community

  3. Always includes conflicting views, differing opinions, so the audience must take sides

  4. Always presents instances of oppression

  5. Audiences are encouraged to make up their own minds, and talk about their views.

  6. Moral quandary? Trying to be persuaded. Audience is encouraged to join in, and take sides.

  7. Showing different reactions. The crowd is asked to come on stage and replace an actor

  8. Resolution comes from the audience. We learn the lesson from the audience.

  9. Realistic, local language, idioms, audience sees their life reflected in the action

  10. Use of strong emotion, dramatic moments

  11. Use of humour to get message across.

  12. A moment of public humiliation…

  13. … a moment of defiance! Uses modelling; shows reality as it could be. Strong female figures.

  14. Psychological and emotional release. Impactful way of presenting messages

  15. Touch on the unthinkable. Theatre is the open licence to show the uncomfortable topics

  16. Safe environment to say anything.

  17. Forum Theatre on xenophobic attacks

  18. Violence can be shocking to see.

  19. The Forum Aspect of Forum Theatre

  20. Public discussion on the acceptance of outsiders and their contributions

  21. The Joker acts as facilitator, getting the audience to participate

  22. Our joker playing with the audience, the “spectactors”

  23. Played in informal settings; where people congregate - thorough-fares, parks.
