Session 1- Criterion A Objective: Students will be able to review expectations for the Community Project • Turn and talk. • Student/ Coach Contract. • Decide on Format for Process Journal. • Students Join Google Classroom. • Set Ongoing Meeting Date. • Complete first entry of Process Journal. • HW: Brainstorm Ideas for CP Topic. Session 1

  3. Discuss purpose of the Community Project What is the purpose of the Community Project? Session 1

  4. Statement of Inquiry- WHY we do the Community Project! Through planning, executing, and reflecting on a Community Project, students create a more equitable society in which they are members, and gain perspective on what it means to be human.

  5. Coach and Student Contract: 1. Review the document 2. Students sign the contract (provide each student with his/her own copy) 3. Coaches sign the contract 4. Coaches will hold on to the contract Due by November 20th Coaches will contact home and introduce themselves! Session 1

  6. Process Journal YOU are expected to use a Process Journal throughout the project. If you decide to create an electronic version of your process journal, share it with your coach. Session 1

Cite at least one source in Noodletools. Session 2

Criterion A: Investigating November 12- January 11 In the community project, students should be able to: • define a goal to address a need within a community, based on personal interests. • A basic goalwill simply state or outline what you are going to do or make. • A challenging goalhas what you are going to do or make and for what purpose – why you are going to do it? • A highly challenging goalhas multiple parts to it and leads to greater learning. Session 2

  20. Using High Quality Resources Look at the Online Resources tab on the Media Center web site. YELLOW boxes are for newspaper and magazine articles. GREEN is science, BLUE is for general resources, like encyclopedias. Session 2

Session #3: Criterion A Objectives: Students will be able to draft a Guiding Question and identify the Global Context • Consult the CP Criterion A Rubric to create a Guiding Question. • Write draft of Guiding Question based on brainstorm and research. • Assess how strong your Guiding Question is based on CP Criterion A Rubric. • Review Global Contexts and select the most appropriate for their CP. • Continue to research community need and add sources to Noodletools (if time permits) • Update Process Journal and reflect on work so far. • HW: Continue to research your topic and refine guiding question as needed. Add at least 2 more sources to Noodletools. Session 3

Assess how strong your Guiding Question is based on CP Criterion A Rubric Go to page 28in your student handbook to access the Criterion A rubric • Does your Guiding Question demonstrate limited research skills, adequate research skills, substantial research skills, or excellent research skills? Session 3

  26. Criterion B: Proposal for Action Planning Template Your Proposal for Action should include designing, problem-solving, decision-making or investigative activities. Proposals should be achievable based on the time and resources available. Do not come up with a proposal that takes too much time, is difficult to follow through, or costs too much money to implement. On the other hand, do not choose projects that are too simple. Use your Proposal for Action to guide your work in this Criterion B: Planning template. This Criterion B: Planning template is crucial in the planning process as it will help you stay on track with working toward the expected goal.

  27. Global Contexts Global contexts direct learning towards independent and shared inquiry into our common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet. Using the world as the broadest context for learning, MYP Community Projects develop meaningful explorations of any of the six global contexts defined in the table on the next page.  The table also provides examples of CPs that can be completed. The selected global context will inform the questions that you will ask as you develop your CP, and it will help you explain why your project matters. Review pages 15-16 to determine Global Context. Record your global context at the bottom of page 16 Session 3

Put extracts in Presentation Template. • Review SSL hours. • HW: Continue to research community need. Update Noodletools. Session 4

Objectives Students will be able to choose the type of action they will take and begin to take action Session 7

Objective C: Taking Action STEP 3: SERVICE AS ACTION Once you have determined the need, your goal, and have planned what you are going to do, it is time to put your proposal into action!  You may have to change your original plans in the light of circumstances or new information. Consult your coach regularly. In the Community Project, action involves a participation of service as learning.  As you become more engaged in your CP, you will want to select one or more types of action: • Useful Ideas as You Work • Take pictures of yourself working on the project. These are useful in showing proof of working on the project as well as for your presentation.   • Document group communication practices. • Use drawings and pictures only when necessary, for example, if they add to the clarity of the project.   • Continue recording and reflecting on what you do during this phase in your process journal.
