The followings are the main salient features of Indian constitution. • A large written constitution • A borrowed constitution. • Fundamental Rights. • Directive principles of state policy. • Parliamentary form of Govt. • Secularism • Independent & Integrated Judiciary • Federalism. • Judicial Review. • Fundamental Duties.

  4. FEDERALISM. • On the basis of distribution of powers the government may be divided in to two types these are- UNITARY FEDERAL

  5. MEANING- • UNITARY-A govt. where all the powers are vested in the hands of the central or union Govt. EX. United Kingdom. • FEDERAL- A form of Govt. where all powers are distributed among the central Govt. & the units. Distribution of powers on the basis of co-operation.

  6. TYPES OF FEDERALISM. • Through out the world there are two kinds of federalism on the basis of its nature these are given bellow. CENTRIPETAL CENTRIFUGAL

  7. CENTRIFUGAL • When a country is too vast & it is very difficult to administer it smoothly ,we may divide the country into number of units. The union Govt. is at the centre & the state Govts. At the state level. Example-India.

  8. CENTRIPETAL • In centripetal form of federalism here some small states are united, joined and make a confederation. This kind of federalism is called as Centripetal federalism. • Example- USA.

  9. FEATURES OF FEDERALISM. • The followings are some of the major features of federalism. • Two sets of Govt. • Division of power. • Double citizenship • Written constitution. • Independent judiciary.

  10. Division of powers • 1.Union List.(99 items) • 2.State list.(67 items) • 3. Concurrent list.(47 items) • 4. Residuary powers. Exercised by the Union Govt.)

  11. Quasi federalism. • According to Prof.K.C. Where Indian federalism is not true federalism because of the strong centre. On the other hand it is called as “Quasi federalism”

  12. Assignment. • 1. Collect some other items of Union list & state list. • 2.What are the features of federalism? • 3.Why India is called as quasi-federal? • 4.Give a comparison of Indian federalism with American federalism.
