Ventricular Assist Device and von Willebrand’s Disease Suggested approach • Assume von Willebrand’s (vWD) is present until proven otherwise if patient has had a continuous-flow ventricular assist device (VAD) in place for >6 months • Not an acute problem for initial implantation Chronic LVAD Patients • Elective procedures: Take bleeding history. If positive, test for vWD and treat accordingly • Emergency procedures: If the emergency is bleeding, assume vWD is present and treat prophylactically (desmopressin may suffice)
