“why can’t everyone just get along?” 1 Corinthians 1:10 John 17:20,21
WHAT IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST? • Ephesians 4:4-6 NKJV 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” • Churches of Christ exist because they follow Jesus as Lord! • Should we lower the standard? • Is this church a “church of Christ?”
WHAT IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST? • Why can’t we announce everyone’s events & swap pulpits with any church? • Could what is called “traditionalism” actually have a Biblical basis?
Where do you draw your circle? • God’s place to draw circles, not men- 1 John 1:1-3 • The apostles did not determine the “circle” – it was delivered to them • Truths to be believed & promises that are to be obeyed- Romans 10:16; 2 Thessalonians 1:8
What if men drew a different circle? • Acts 15:1 “unless circumcised…not saved.” • Different gospel – Galatians 1:6-9 • Both are not equal • Only one must be accepted • What if it’s the wrong one? • Not a matter of popularity – Galatians 1:10,11
Do churches today have different circles? • Huge differences on how one is saved • Most are confessed Calvinists • Is one saved without any conditions? • What if we extended fellowship to those who believe we ar e saved at the point of faith without confession or baptism?
Fellowship & water baptism • Why has the subject of water baptism demanded a separation of fellowship? • Jesus designated baptism as foundational doctrine for all Christians- Ephesians 4:4-6 • Paul said Christians brought into fellowship with Christ & His blood at baptism- Romans 6:3,4; Galatians 3:26,27
Fellowship & water baptism • Anabaptists severely persecuted for correct belief that only believers should be baptized by burial in water • Should only believers be baptized? – Mark 16:15,16; Acts 2:36-38 • The Bible teaches baptism is immersion- Romans 6:3,4; Colossians 2:12 • Confusion if both “truths” equally taught & believed! • “What is the easiest to practice?” 1 Kings 12:28
Great controversy over purpose of baptism • Baptism final step to forgiveness- Acts 2:38; 22:16 • Into what were you baptized? – Acts 19:1-5 • Truth is why churches of Christ had to separated from various denominations and stand for the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Certainty of assimilation • What will happen if you join a denomination & held to the Gospel? • May be tolerated IF: • You give financial support to those who differ with you • You allow people to be taught contrary to what you believe • You are silent!
Certainty of assimilation • Could you accept those conditions & be taken seriously by anyone? • A Separation of Fellowship is demanded! • Modern “house-church” movement is a half-way house to denominationalism
The fruits of compromised fellowship • Common cause is pride – 1 Corinthians 5:1,2,6 • “Intellectual superiority” brings compromise! – 2 Corinthians 11:3,4, 19-21
Compromised fellowship sure path to unbelief • Do you know how few churches believe in the inspiration of the Bible? • “Tolerance & ecumenism are like father & son. The grandfather is a lack of respect for the authority of the Bible. The existence of ecumenism demand tolerance. The movement the ecumenical unity has involved the discounting of more & more that might be important enough to differ over.” Bob Waldron
Where will the church be tomorrow if we don’t take a firm stand for the truth? • Jude 3 – “contend earnestly for the faith” • “Contend” – “to contend about a thing, as a combatant” “The word “earnestly” is added to convey the intensive force of the preposition.” • 1 Timothy 6:12 NKJV 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
