  2. Albrecht von Graefe (1828-1870) from Berlin Germany and often called the "Founder of Ophthalmology" was reportedly one the first to use the ophthalmoscope invented by Helmholtz. Graefe remarked: "Helmholtz has unfolded to us a whole new world". Von Graefe used the invention to describe the cupped disc of glaucoma in 1855 and central retinal artery occlusion and "choked disc" in 1861.Albrecht von Graefe (1828-1870) was the son of Karl Ferdinand von Graefe of Berlin. Although he began studying mathematics, he became interested in natural sciences and medicine. After studying in many Universities of Europe (Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Paris, London, Dublin and Edinburgh) he practiced ophthalmology in Berlin-founding a private institution devoted to treating eyes. He then became the professor of ophthalmology in Berlin's University. He is known for his treatment of glaucoma and describing a surgery for cataract.
