  2. The Statement That Caused The Uproar "We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that. ... We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that," Cathy emphasized. "We intend to stay the course," he said. "We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.” (Dan Cathy - www.brnow.org)

  3. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Be encouraged that so many people care about what is right and respect God’s plan for marriage! • It can be discouraging and frustrating to see the moral decline of our society. It seems we are moving further & further from God • Impactful movements: Look out for number one, abandonment of authority in 60’s & 70’s, sexual freedom, feminism, humanism, etc • People used to say: “One Nation Under God” – Now acknowledging God has been removed from gov, courts, classrooms, & billboards. • Divorce is the norm, same sex marriage is gaining steam, corruption in politics, morals eroding, crime rising, abortion is made easy • The direction our nation is headed fills us with fear and leaves us feeling pretty alone spiritually. We can feel like strangers at home!

  4. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Be encouraged that so many people care about what is right and respect God’s plan for marriage! • Then on August 1, 2012 thousands and thousands of people took a stand together for something in which we believe! • There were long lines wrapping around stores, cars backing up major roads, people waiting hours for food, cheering when food ran out • Certainly some had the wrong motivation and had the wrong attitude in their hearts toward others… but most were doing this to stand up for what they believe in and standing to support another person. • People were willing to be inconvenienced, wait patiently, and do whatever it took to send a message. This was refreshing!

  5. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Be encouraged that so many people care about what is right and respect God’s plan for marriage! • This day could be for us what God’s encouragement was for Elijah when he felt discouraged (1 Kings 18:20-21, 39; 19:1-2, 10) • He had been on a spiritual roller coaster ride – He had seen great victories and now was being chased by Jezebel in an attempt to kill him. • He feels alone and depressed spiritually – Why? He dwelled on the ungodliness & wickedness so much that he lost his focus • God’s Message: There are 7,000 people left in Israel who will stand with you against idolatry... you are not and will not be alone! • This motivated Elijah to get back up and keep fighting for what was right and true. Knowing he wasn’t alone was strengthening! • When we take stands, we are not alone! How many people more people might God have in this area? (Acts 18:9-11)

  6. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Making judgments against sinfulness and condemning sin is not about intolerance or hate speech: • Some who opposed the original statement and others made like it say that it goes against the nature of Christianity: • In other words, it’s not Christ-like to condemn and judge other people • “Don’t judge me” becomes a trump card – Releases from guilt & criticism • Such statements come from people who don’t really know Jesus! • Jesus did condemn, draw lines, & command repentance. He wasn’t soft or accepting of sin (John 5:14; John 8:11; Matthew 23) • Showed mercy, but said, “Go your way and SIN NO MORE” • Jesus encouraged the weak, but never to the sacrifice of truth & morality • Did Jesus condemn homosexuality? Yes, in His appeal to God’s marriage law at the beginning and what he left for the apostles to teach

  7. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Making judgments against sinfulness and condemning sin is not intolerance or hate speech: • Some will quote Jesus’ words, “Judge not” in defense (Mt 7:1-5) • They fail to read on – Jesus clarifies what He means. It’s not about never judging but avoiding the kind that is hypocritical in nature • He says to get the beam out of our own eye and then go to our brother – So some judgments must be made! (John 7:24; Mt 7:15-20, etc) • False assurance is found – If I don’t judge others then God won’t judge me! Again, this isn’t about ALL judgment (Jas 2:13) • You cannot obey God’s word without making judgments and being willing to condemn those in sin and error. The very nature of evangelism involves identifying people as lost in sin and teaching them!

  8. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Making judgments against sinfulness and condemning sin is not intolerance or hate speech: • Our culture says it’s a negative thing to be intolerant. What’s the opposite option? Be tolerant? Christians don’t tolerant sin! • Many passages speak of God’s hatred of sin and falsehood. Godly men spoke openly about their hatred for this as well. Strong response!

  9. Psa5:5 The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. • Psa26:5 I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked. • Psa_31:6I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. • Psa_97:10 O you who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked. • Psa_101:3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. • Psa_119:104 Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. • Psa_119:113 I hate the double-minded, but I love your law. • Psa_119:128 Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way. • Psa_119:163 I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. • Psa_139:21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? • Psa_139:22 I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies. • Pro_8:13 The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. • Isa_61:8 For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. • Jer_12:8 My heritage has become to me like a lion in the forest; she has lifted up her voice against me; therefore I hate her. • Amo_5:15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

  10. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Making judgments against sinfulness and condemning sin is not intolerance or hate speech: • Our culture says it’s a negative thing to be intolerant. What’s the opposite option? Be tolerant? We are to abhor evil! (Rom. 12:9) • Many passages speak of God’s hatred of sin and falsehood. Godly men spoke openly about their hatred for this as well. Strong response! • Intolerant: Unable, unwilling to endure  If its being hateful and ugly to others, that’s wrong. If it means standing against, not putting up, & refusing to accept something wrong… then it’s good. • Everyone is intolerant! Who was not intolerant of the Penn State scandal recently? So we’re just picking what we are comfortable being intolerant about! • We cannot tolerate sin and error because we understand what’s at stake! • Hate speech? Silence is the absolute worst form of hate speech!

  11. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Taking a stand for truth and righteousness does make a difference in this world: • Remember how all this started with a simple statement made by a business man in an interview. • Publicity stunt? Drumming up business? A political move? No, this was really done too simple and too private for that to be the case • He just answered a question – Doubtful he saw August 1 happening. • He could have faced difficult consequences and he did faced tough criticism – Could have lost customers, faced threats, and worse! • Some government officials who didn’t like what he said vowed to fight against Chick-Fil-A opening news stores & operating in their area • His willingness to speak openly is refreshing and he quickly found out he wasn’t alone and he motivated many people to take a stand as well

  12. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Taking a stand for truth and righteousness does make a difference in this world: • God’s people will stand up for what’s right, even in the face of tough consequences (Daniel 1:8, 3:16-18, 6:10) • When these men took their stands, they were not sure how it would turn out. They knew God could save them, but didn’t know if He would • When they stood, they made it easier for themselves and those who followed them to take future stands for what was right • When they stood, they brought some very ungodly men to respect their faith and even come to praise Jehovah. • Even got a law passed that no one could oppose faith in the Lord!

  13. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Taking a stand for truth and righteousness does make a difference in this world: • Standing up for what’s right impacts for more than we imagine in the heat of the moment (Philippians 1:27-28) • Our own faith is strengthened. We have more power to stand next time. • We pave the way for others to take stands after us. The expectations are in place by those who experienced our stands. • The advances of Satan are pushed back – Darkness must retreat a little • Others are taught – Think about all the verses and discussion that has taken place on Facebook& in the news. God’s word gets out. • We will likely find ourselves needing to take a stand, knowing it will cost us dearly. Be ready! (Rev. 12:11; 1 Pet 3:13-15)

  14. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Be careful about how we stand and the things we say: • While this event was a great opportunity for the light of truth to shine, it could have also been a chance for the cause of Christ to be blasphemed: • If those who professed to be Christians spoke and acted with bitterness, anger, hatred, and animosity… It could have been a very dark day. • If those who professed to be Christians had not conducted themselves with grace and patience… It could have been a very dark day. • There were a few comments and attitudes that reflected a disdain for the people who are lost in darkness and sin. Some were too happy and excitement about condemning those who are wrong. • While its unfair to judge an entire “movement” based on the actions of a few… this is exactly what takes place many times.

  15. Lessons From The Chick-Fil-A Stand • Be careful about how we stand and the things we say: • Condemning sin and standing against sin is important. But we don’t get pleasure out of people being lost! (Romans 9:1-3) • Yes, we need to speak the truth with boldness and conviction, but that’s not an excuse for being mean, ugly, or bitter in the way we speak it! (Col. 4:6; Ephesians 4:15) • We need to make sure that we don’t have the attitude of the Pharisees when it comes to our view of those who are “dirty” with sin. Do we care enough to get personally involved?
