  2. Plot Overview The story follows Winston Smith, a lower Ingsoc party member who has began to openly question the doctrines and laws of the party and the all omnipotent Big Brother, ruler of the party and Oceania. The society he lives in is ruled by this party and have forbidden the people to even think subversive thoughts, even going so far as to eliminate any words in the common language that could be construed as subversive.

  3. Overview Continued Winston illegally purchases a diary from an antique store and begins to write down his "thoughtcrimes", which are the worst crimes a person can commit. To make matters more risky, the party is always watching and listening through secret bugs and telescreens. Winston believes that an inner party named O’Brien is a member of “The Brotherhood”, a subversive organization, and want to help him. He eventually meets a girl named Julia and they have a covert affair.

  4. More Plot Affairs are illegal and subversive in this society, but that doesn’t stop the rebellious pair. They rent a room above the same junk shop where Winston bought his diary and continue their affair in supposed privacy. Later on in their affair they are called to O’Brien’s apartment and join the Brotherhood.

  5. “Dat Plot” The pair were betrayed be the owner of the shop, who was an agent of the Thought Police the entire time. The room they had rented was bugged by the Though Police and the pair are separated and dragged away to the Ministry of Love by O’Brien and his officers. At the Ministry of Love Winston is tortured and “reeducated” by his O’Brien and his jailors. In the end Winston is released back into society where he learns to love Big Brother and the Party.

  6. Characters Winston-A subversive party member who works at the Ministry of Truth. He is very pessimistic and knows that in the end he’ll be caught. Julia-The other subvert in the story and Winston’s lover. She is more optimistic and less assuming. O’Brien-An inner party member who Winston believes is a member of the subversive “Brotherhood”. Big Brother-The all omnipotent leader of the party. No one outside of the inner party has ever seen him and few even know his age. You never discover if he actually exists or is just symbolic for the collective leadership of the inner party.

  7. Themes Mankind will be willing to give up their freedoms in order to secure their safety. It is important for us to safeguard our freedoms and to not let any one party or person gain too much power. “Love is our resistance.”
