  4. Theme of The Third International Conference on SIDS “The sustainable development of SIDS through genuine and durable partnerships.” (Outcome document of the Inter-regional preparatory meeting for The Third International Conference on SIDS)

UN Designation of 2014 as IYOS • UN General Assembly Resolution 67/206 in December 2012 Encourages all Member States, the United Nations system and all other stakeholders to take advantage of the Year to promote actions at all levels, including through international, regional and sub-regional cooperation, as appropriate, aimed at the achievement of sustainable development of small island developing States;

The Global Launch of IYOS 2014 • The Year was officially launched by the UN Secretary General on February 24, 2014 prior to the first prepcom for the Third International Conference on SIDS which was held at the UN Headquarters in Feb. 2014. "The International Year is an opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary resiliency and rich cultural heritage of the people of small island developing States". UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon

  7. Logo and Tagline for IYOS 2014 • A logo and tagline for IYOS was also developed - International Year of Small Island Developing States – 2014: A Global Celebration

Significance of IYOS 2014 The IYOS 2014 is an important opportunity for a group of countries to, inter alia, - • Celebrate the accomplishments, culture, food, innovation and potential of SIDS • Call attention to the fact that SIDS are important, viable partners for investment • Remind the international community that they need support to advance their sustainable development. (Ref. Expert Group Meeting on the International Year of SIDS Dec. 2013)
