This document outlines the essential elements for preparing preliminary mockups for a class project. It covers the description of the problem, proposed solutions, data utilization, methodologies, and anticipated results. The goal is to create a mockup that mirrors the final presentation closely, incorporating nearly final methodologies while allowing for placeholder data. The update requires self-assessment of progress in various aspects like data sourcing and statistical methods, with deadlines for finalizing the project template, visualizations, and preliminary results.

Preparing for the project mockups INFO 4470 John M. Abowd and Lars Vilhuber March 28, 2011
Elements of project • Description of problem/question • Sketch of solution/answer • Data to be used in solution/answer • Methodolody used • Results
Project mockups • Goal: a preliminary version of the class project • Should have most of the elements of the final presentation/etc. • Should have close-to-final methodology • Need not have final data analysis – can have fake numbers that can provide a hint at the final data • Should be in the form (possibly not interactive) that the final presentation will have • If providing a paper, a summary presentation should accompany it
Course project preview • Update and expand it by Friday, April 1 (Lab 9) • Assess yourself for each item the progress with respect to the final implementation (0-100%)
Updated course project template • Outline • Should be finalized: (100%) • Data • Sources: should be finalized (90-100%) • Knowledge of quality issues and solutions: >50% • Statistical methods • Choice should be final (90-100%) • Issues may still be present (>50)
Updated course project template • Visualization, other components • Choice of visualization tools should be close to finalized (90-100%) • Actual implementation may still lag (>25%) • Results • Some preliminary results (>10%) • Presentation thereof need not be in final form (graphic, etc.)
