  5. Lord of the Sabbath (6:1-11) Note the account of what happened (including the man with withered hand). His teachings on Sabbath: Jesus has the authority over the Sabbath. Works of necessity. Opening of Car Park On Sabbath Prompts Protest 27 June 2009 Hundreds of ultra- orthodox Jews have clashed with police in Jerusalem for a third consecutive Saturday over a car park which opens on the Sabbath. Many ultra-Orthodox Jews fear the car park opening will lead to shops trading on the Sabbath

  10. Beatitudes & Woes (6:20-49) Note the four beatitudes. Poor (v20):Of humble mind receiving God’s word in a teachable spirit. Hunger (v21a): after righteousness(Matthew). Persecutions (v22) Analysis of the Sermon (pg 80marshall) The Beatitudes are regarding the kingdom – who is it for . The principles upon which the Kingdom is founded – LOVE. The basis of the Kingdom - CHRIST

  11. Where would Jesus stand? Seemingly discrepancy between Matthew – sermon on the mount and Luke’s sermon on a level place

  12. Your enemies those who hate you, who curse you, and who mistreat you. If anyone hits you on one cheek,; if someone takes your coat,. who asks you for something, and when someone takes what is yours,. Do for others just what you want them to do for you. "If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing? And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get it back, why should you receive a blessing? Love do good bless those pray for those let him hit the other one too let him have your shirt as well Give to everyone do not ask for it back Culture of the Kingdom of God vs culture of the world • Even sinners love those who love them! • And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that! • Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount! How many types of problematic people did Jesus mention? Who are they?

Name three ways Do good, bless them, pray for them World only loves those who loves them, only do good to those who do good to them, lend to those they can get back something from Christians love those who hate them, do good to those who can’t or won’t do good to them, lend to those they can’t expect to return.

  16. How do you know if a tree is healthy? How do you know if a person is good? How do you ensure good things are stored in a person’s heart? Name one way to find out what is in a man’s heart? Bear good fruits Bear good fruits Treasure good things in his heart How can that happen? Focus on the good things, remember the good things and not the bad things Listen to what he speaks spontaneously and when under pressure. Are you a healthy or a poor tree?

The two house builders • (Luk 6:46) "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and yet don't do what I tell you? • (Luk 6:47) Anyone who comes to me and listens to my words and obeys them---I will show you what he is like. • (Luk 6:48) He is like a man who, in building his house, dug deep and laid the foundation on rock. The river flooded over and hit that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. • (Luk 6:49) But anyone who hears my words and does not obey them is like a man who built his house without laying a foundation; when the flood hit that house it fell at once---and what a terrible crash that was!"

  20. Words First person to receive a note & pass the word around from the first to the last one. Last person to write down what was heard. Check how the word has changed. Words have effect on us. They can make or break us. Jesus’ word is powerful as seen from 7:1-10. It depicts faith on the part of the Centurion and also the power of the Lord’s word.

  22. Sabbath • What incidents happen to show Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath • Scenario : You are asked to do a part-time waiter’s job in Shangri-la Hotel on Sunday. The overtime pay is 3x the usual rate! Would you take up the job and why? • Scenario: Your parents asked you to look after your sick grandmother on Sunday. Would you? Why? • What is our motivation for doing the work on Sunday? • What sort of work can we do on Sunday and still please God?

Luke 6: 12- 16 Twelve Apostles • (Luk 6:12) At that time Jesus went up a hill to pray and spent the whole night there praying to God. • (Luk 6:13) When day came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he named apostles: • (Luk 6:14) Simon (whom he named Peter) and his brother Andrew; James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, • (Luk 6:15) Matthew and Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon (who was called the Patriot), • (Luk 6:16) Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became the traitor.   24. The Faith of the Centurion (7:1-10) “Sir, don’t trouble yourself. I do not deserve to have you come into my house;…Just give the order, and my servant will get well.”

  25. Why was his faith great?(7:1-10) He recognised the power of Jesus in the invisible world. Just issue the command & the invisible power will obey. Contrast it with The disciples waking Jesus in the storm(8:25) The people of Nazareth (Mark 6:6)

  27. Raising the Nian Widow’s son (7:11-17) By touching the coffin, He became ceremonially unclean. But cf the leper (5:12-15), both were healed and Jesus was not polluted by the touch Note how the word has spread to whole country (till Judea)! (see map) Only Elijah and Elisha prophets had raised the dead to life. Other instance – Jairus’ daughter(8:40-56)

  28. John the Baptist in jail (7:18-35) A strange question: “Are you the one John said was going to come, or should we expect someone else?” Four possible reasons: Time for Jesus to reveal Himself To satisfy his own disciples Is Jesus the same person he baptised? Tried by imprisonment, he doubted Jesus replied (v22) about the things they ought to look for in the Messiah. This passage is a Messianic prophecy. Jesus exhibits proofs of its fulfillment in Him. To the Baptist in prison these signs would be particularly helpful, far more than a declaration from our Lord. Nothing would help him like facts. (Marshall pg83)

  31. She Came Wasting – Trevor Haug Who do you think that it is wasting? Why do you think she shed tears at Jesus’ feet? Do you think it demands a lot for her to do what she did? Why? Why was the word “extravagance*” used? What is the application for us in this day and age? *Extravagant: Given to lavish or imprudent expenditure; exceeding reasonable bounds; excessive; unrestrained.
