  1. ARI • Most common human ailment • Leading cause of morbidity among children < 5 years, older age groups • Second most common cause of mortality among children < 5 years of age • CFR in Pakistan is 4 – 11% • Hospitalized CFR is 23%. • 26% of all deaths under 5 in a community are attributed by ARI. • 3.9 M children <5 die due to pneumonia. • Total deaths among children 10M / yr

  2. ARI • Constitutes 30-60% of patients in a hospital outpatients • 80% of these children have AURTI • 20% develop ALRI • Majority is pneumonia. • Pneumonia is one of the most common causes of hospital admissions and deaths. • 10 times more deaths in developing countries

  3. OBJECTIVES OF ARI control prog. • To reduce mortality from ARI esp. from pneumonia • To reduce inappropriate use of antibiotics and other drugs for the treatment of ARI in young children.

  4. ARI control programme • Reduce mortality of children < 5 years of age due to pneumonia • Rationalize the use of antibiotics and other drugs in ARI • Strategy: • standard case management of ARI • Immunization • Improved feeding practices esp. BF • Education of mothers

  5. Cut off Resp. rate to diagnose pneumonia
