A General, A Patriot • His three siblings died during childhood • He wanted to go to Yale, but became a merchant to pay the family debt • Early on he showed he was ambitious • British restrictions of trade caused him to join the Sons of Liberty • Victor @ Ticonderoga • Appointed by Washington to attack Quebec • Named “America’s Hannibal”

  3. The turning point--Saratoga

  4. The beginning of mis-trust • Arnold was overlooked for promotions • He was the hero of Saratoga and nearly died in the attack • He would never walk again without a limp • Saratoga brought the French into the war in support of the Patriot Cause • Gen Gates declared credit for Saratoga while Arnold was still in the hospital • His wife dies while he is in the hospital

  5. A man with divided loyalties • Arnold was appointed military commander of Philadelphia • He was falsely convicted of a crime • Soon after he wrote his first treasonous letter

  6. The deception at West Point • Washington was unaware of the depth of Arnold’s unhappiness • He tried to find an important position for Arnold • West Point had great strategic value • Arnold offered to remove Patriot defenses long enough for British ships to pass • He was to get 20,000 British pounds ($3 million in today’s money)

  7. After West Point • Arnold joined the British army for a time and conducted several raids • He was never fully trusted by the British • He took his new wife and child to live in London

  8. The legacy • Washington went out of his way to associate Arnold with treason • Most people do not realize that for most of the war, Arnold was a hero • “Benedict” was a popular name in this era. It quickly fell out of favor…how many men do you know with this first name?
