  2. Earthquake hazard • A measure of how often a place is to have damaging earthquakes in the future. • This is determined by past and present seismic activity. • Look at Page 234 figure 1

  3. Forecasting • The number of earthquakes in a area is related to the strength of the Earthquakes. • Earthquakes with less magnitude occur more frequently.

  4. Gap Hypothesis • A Earthquake is most likely to occur on a active fault where no earthquakes have occurred over a period of time • Seismic gaps- area along faults where few earthquakes occur • Turn page 236

  5. Earthquake Resistant Buildings • Page 237 • Technology • Mass Damper • Active tendon System • Base isolators • Flexible Pipes • Cross Braces

  6. Mass Damper Active Tendon Similar to mass damper. Sensors tell the computer the building is moving and shift a weight. • A large weight placed near the top of buildings. • During a Earthquake the computer will shift the weight to keep the building steady.

  7. Base Isolators Cross Braces Made of steel They counteract pressure on a building during a earthquake. • Act similar to shocks on a car. • They absorb seismic waves. • Made of rubber and steel.

  8. Flexible Pipes • The pipes have special flexible joint that allow them to bend an not break during a earthquake. • Uses on Gas and water lines

  9. Be Prepared Before Shaking Starts While Shaking Crouch or lie down under a table. Stay in a location away from heavy object that may fall. • Safeguarded your home • Find safe places within each room of your house • Have a safety plan with (family and neighbors) • Keep a earthquake safety kit

  10. After the Shaking • Stay away form damage buildings and power lines • Beware of aftershocks • Follow safety plan
