Taiwan Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, is a land of divine beauty and warm hospitality Taiwan is composed of the main island of Taiwan & the Penghu Archipelago, which is made up of 64 islands & 21 other smaller islands It is off the coast of mainland China in the South China Sea, separated by the Taiwan Strait, which is about 220km at its widest point &130km at its narrowest. Taiwan is amidst a chain of islands from Japan in the north to the Philippines in the southwest. total area being almost 36,000 sq. km

  3. Taiwan Population - 22.99 million people (Updated June 10, 2008 ) A country of various religious beliefs. There are currently thirteen registered religions practiced. These include Buddhism (the most popular), Taoism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Hsuan-yuan Chiao, Islam, Li-ism, Tenrikyo, Baha'i, T'ienti Teachings, Tien Te Chiao, I-Kuan Tao, and Mahikarikyo 304,000individualsare believers of Catholicism. Christianity came to Taiwan in 1626 through the Spanish occupation

Federation of Taiwan Catholic Healthcare Association (FTCHA) : • Taiwan Catholic Hospital Association • Taiwan Catholic Physician Association • Taiwan Catholic Nursing Association • Taiwan Catholic Pastoral Association * FTCHA & Taiwan Catholic Physician Association are registeredwith the government * FTCHA had meeting two times annually, while the Taiwan Catholic Hospital, Nursing & Catholic Pastoral Associations have their monthly meetings

  10. Reaching out to the hard to reach destitute areas

Taiwan Catholic Physician Medical Association • Since 1940, a group of catholic doctors had a regular gathering • In 1970, the Taiwan Catholic Medical Physician Association was established • In 1980, Archbishop office had a meeting for its establishment • In 2001, 呂鴻基醫師 & 葉炳強醫師 became the chairman & secretary general of the association, respectively • In 2006, the association got registered in the government • We have our monthly gathering & spiritual sharing on the last Sunday of every month. It is always started with a Sunday mass. It is held at 震旦中心. Here we listen to related lectures & have sharing in the latter part.

Fu Jen Catholic University School of Medicine • Founded in 2000, the School of Medicine at Fu Jen Catholic University is committed to cultivate medical professionals with knowledge, compassion, empathy and love, some of the core values of the Catholic belief • The School of Medicine is one of the medical schools in Taiwan to adopt the pedagogy, problem-based learning (PBL), so that students can acquire medical knowledge from small group discussions and case studies • The implementation of PBL not only allows the School of Medicine to win applause from the Taiwan Medical Accreditation Council, but also brings a wave of reform in medical education in Taiwan.

Conclusions • Catholic Medical services provide the message : Human beings are the beloved children of God God wants us to love & support each other 教會醫療給社會的訊息: • “人”是上主鍾愛的子女 • 他要我們彼此相愛,互相扶持。 • Love can treat many wounds, makes up many shortenings 愛能治療很多創傷,彌補許多過失 • To be part of the medical service is our honor Our mission To transmit God’s love to everyone Let medical services represent God’s mercy 能加入醫療服務的行列是我們的榮幸 我們的使命 把上主的愛傳到人間 使醫療成為上主仁慈的工具
